    Malawi is a member of Population Services International which is a global health organization dedicated to improving the health of people in the developing world by focusing on serious challenges like lack of family planning, HIV and AIDS, barriers to maternal health, and the greatest threats to children under five, including malaria, diarrhea, pneumonia and malnutrition. 

    PSI is looking for community based consultants to assist in delivering on a community WASH project in the following Districts: Machinga, Phalombe, Zomba, Chikwawa, Nsanje, Karonga, Nkhata-Bay and Salima.

    Context:
    PSI, with support from Unicef, is implementing an 11 month Emergency Response Project in Chitipa, Karonga, Nkhata-Bay, Salima, Kasungu, Lilongwe, Balaka, Machinga, Zomba, Mangochi, Phalombe, Blantyre, Neno, Mwanza, Chikwawa and Nsanje districts. In this project, PSI is sensitizing the communities on good water, sanitation and hygiene practices to reduce the incidences and outbreaks of cholera and other water related diseases. This project is a social behaviour change project, looking at influencing specific practices and behaviors that put individuals and communities at risk of outbreaks of cholera and other water related diseases. PSI will be developing messages and disseminating these messages through different channels in the communities.  

    Core Functions / Responsibilities:
    The key objective of the consultancy is to coordinate, facilitate, and implement targeted communication activities for prevention, support to treatment and control of cholera outbreaks and other water related diseases in their designated districts. 

    Deliverables
    1. To identify and map out communities at risk of cholera and other water related diseases in their respective districts
    2. Conduct  community meetings with key community gate keepers in each of the identified areas
    3. Together with the community, develop a disease outbreak prevention plan to be implemented by the village health committees 
    4. Conduct  product demonstration point of use water treatment targeting mothers with children under 5 and general community members
    5. Conduct  hand washing demonstrations with the targeted communities 
    6. Reach out to  men and women with community sensitization messages on cholera and other water related diseases
    7. Provide referrals for treatment to any clients who may need health services 
    8. Distribute  IEC materials in the communities
    9. Record daily activities and submit the outreach data sheet to the WASH coordinator on weekly basis for all the activities done in his/her area
    10. Prepare weekly and monthly reports and submit them to the PSI WASH Coordinator that highlight activities conducted and impact achieved
    The consultant should be able to discuss and finalize the work plan with the WASH coordinator and inform of any delay or work around required for timely completion of activities. 

    Required Qualifications and Experience:
    Education
    • Certificate in Public Health, Rural and community development or a related field from an accredited academic institution with two years of relevant professional experience.
    Experience
    • Experience working with communities and community structures
    • Experience in delivering SBCC messages in the local language in communities
    • Experience in the implementation of water, sanitation and hygiene related projects is an added advantage
    • Sound knowledge of principles for humanitarian assistance, and other relevant trainings is an added advantage
    • Knowledge of the district and preferably staying in that district
    Languages
    Fluency in Chichewa and any local language in the specific district is a must, with good English writing skills.

    Drive the country office staff and their official visitors on official trips, and drive for the FAO Representative and his/her visitors on occasions as necessary;
    Meet staff and official visitors at the airport; facilitate hotel check in and other local formalities;
    Log official trips, daily mileage, fuel consumption, transportation/vehicle related expenditures, vehicle servicing, repairs, etc.;
    Ensure day to day maintenance of the assigned vehicle(s); check oil, water, battery, tyres, etc.; perform minor repairs and timely arrange for any other repairs necessary to keep the vehicle safe and technically sound at all times; maintain the vehicle(s) in clean conditions;
    Handle local and organizational formalities when involved in an accident, ensure that in this case all organizational and local/country rules , regulations and procedures are followed correctly;
    collect and deliver mail, documents and other communications/items from and to the country office; go to the post office, airport, government agencies, other UN agencies, institutions, project sites, etc., to take and deliver items and communications; keep records as required;
    When needed, assist the country office staff in performing simple clerical duties such as making and answering telephone calls, making photocopies, keeping records, etc.;
    Perform other related duties as required.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS – candidates will be assessed against the following:
    Education: Secondary School Education and possession of valid driver’s license.
    Experience: Three years of work experience as a driver. Flawless, safe driving record.
    Languages: Working knowledge (Level C) of the FAO official language used for communication within the country (English, French or Spanish).
