Midwife with CPD programme experience in Malawi

Volunteer midwife with CPD programme experienced roles focus on improving nurse training and community health services

Malawi is among the world’s least developed nations.  It has low life expectancy (50.3 years at birth) and high infant mortality. Nearly half of all children are born without the assistance of a trained health specialist. Each year mothers and babies are dying of preventable conditions. With large rural populations depending on overburdened hospitals, midwives play a critical role in delivering babies safely. In this exciting and worthwhile role for a volunteer Midwife with Continuous Professional Development experience, you’ll be helping to improve nurse training and community health services.
What does the role involve?
 Key responsibilities include:
  • Support the enforcement of Codes of Conduct and Practice in the midwifery profession
  • Conduct research in order to identify areas for Continuous Professional Development (CPD)
  • Enhance use of various tools for CPD
  • Share specialist clinical knowledge with colleagues
  • Participate in the delivery of ongoing training, education and support of colleagues
  • Support Monitoring and Evaluation of the CPD framework
  • Lead on developing links between the Nurses and Midwives Council of Malawi CPD framework and the Ministry of Health Human Resource Management Information System (HRMIS) to ensure CPD points are accounted for when deciding on promotions and deployment.
Skills, qualifications and experience required
You would need to be a qualified Registered General Midwife. You’ll need a minimum of 5 years post registration experience, and sound experience of CPD programmes. Evidence of well developed communication and interpersonal skills is also desirable. IT skills must be acquired during the in-house training period to gain a sound grasp of the functionality of specialized software systems.
And the rest...
You’ll be based at the Nurses and Midwives Council in Lilongwe, the capital and largest city of Malawi based in the central region near the borders with Mozambique and Zambia. The estimated population is 781,538 (2012). There are good local facilities. Lilongwe serves as a retreat for travellers en route to Lake Malawi and the country’s wildlife reserves.   English is the official language of Malawi and the local people will be curious to meet you. Accommodation will be close to your place of work. We’ll ask you to commit to 12-18 months to make a sustainable contribution to our development goals. In return, we’ll provide you with extensive training before your placement and our financial package includes a local salary, return flights, accommodation and insurance. When you return to your home country, we'll help you to resettle and many of our returned volunteers stay involved with us long after their placement ends.
