The United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UN-Habitat, is the United Nations agency for human settlements. It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all. UN-HABITAT is the lead agency within the United Nations system for the implementation of the Habitat Agenda. UN-Habitat has strengthened its areas of work around three main areas: Urban Planning, Urban Economy and Urban Legislation. Its activities contribute to the overall objective of the United Nations system to reduce poverty and promote sustainable development within the context and the challenges of a rapidly urbanizing world. The post is located within the City Planning, Extension and Design Unit, in the Urban Planning and Design Branch of UN-Habitat.

Education
Advanced university degree (Master or equivalent) in architecture, urban planning, regional planning Urban management or environmental planning and management is required. Qualifying years of experience are calculated following the receipt of the first level university degree recognised by the United Nations.

Work Experience
At least seven (7) years of progressively responsible professional experience in urban planning, social/economic sustainable development, urban development policy analysis and assessment related work is required. Experience in city level planning and capacity building in the same field are a requirement. Experience in developing countries and knowledge of recent urban planning best practices would be an asset.

Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations. For the post advertised, fluency in spoken and written English is required. Knowledge of one or more other UN languages will be an advantage.
