Full financial support will be provided.
The student will be registered at the University of Leicester in the United Kingdom and spend approximately 50% of their time in Leicester gaining experience in biochemical, pharmacological and molecular approaches to parasitology. The remainder of the time the student will be located in The Gambia where they will conduct field work and investigate the toxicity associated with the anti-malarial primaquine.
This PhD-Studentship will benefit from the excellent scientific infrastructure at the MRC Toxicology Unit that offers first class, imaging, genomic, proteomic and cell biology facilities as well as an internal PhD training programme that equips the student with scientific and transferable skills. This will be offered together with the PhD programme in The Gambia Unit that provides unparalleled opportunities for research training in The Gambia and West African sub-region. The MRC Unit The Gambia provides world class, multidisciplinary research programmes supported by clinical, technology, infrastructure and training platforms that meet internationally recognized standards. Funded Studentship in Organometallic Gold Chemistry

University of East Anglia -School of Chemistry

Key steps in gold-mediated water splitting and CO2 reduction cycles
Deadline: 30 April 2014.
Supervisor: Professor Manfred Bochmann, m.bochmann@uea.ac.uk
The Project:
This project is part of an ERC Advanced Grant on gold chemistry. We have recently discovered a unique reaction, the deoxygenation of an Au-OH to an Au-H complex, which opens the way for a new water splitting cycle. The low affinity for O ligands makes gold also suitable for CO2 reduction. Pincer-type ligands of variable donor strengths are an essential tool for controlling the reactivity of such complexes. This project aims to explore the structure-reactivity relationship of gold complexes with bi- and tridentate ligands in environmentally important reactions. It also offers the possibility to explore the energy landscape of these reactions computationally.
For further details about this project, contact Professor M. Bochmann, m.bochmann@uea.ac.uk.
Entry Requirements: First Class degree (MChem) or equivalent.
Funding:Funding is available for this project. For full details visit: www.uea.ac.uk/study/postgraduate/research-degrees/science/chemistry
