Senior Manager, Gender Programming (Malawi)

What We Do
Girl Effect works to break the cycle of intergenerational poverty. We do this by connecting girls to each other and to the critical assets they need. We work to create lasting perception change by harnessing media in innovative ways and building social networks that develop girls' positive perceptions of themselves and shift how others see and value them.
Even when services and assets that girls need are available, existing prejudices and negative social norms prevent girls from accessing them.
When a girl is better educated, has access to sexual and reproductive healthcare information and services, has access and control of economic assets, is safe from violence and exploitation, and has the capabilities and confidence to make positive choices, she can break the cycle of poverty. Girl Effect believes that perception change is a critical capacity-builder to improve awareness and sensitivities of communities and families, and create an environment in which girls are better able to overcome barriers preventing them from accessing what they need.
We are a brand- and programmes-led operation with offices in Rwanda, Ethiopia, Nigeria, a mobile platform live in over 30 countries, and our headquarters in London.
At the moment we are expanding our operations to new geographies, including Malawi. Here our presence will include the establishment of a new girl-centered brand and media platform and girl networks for adolescent girls. We will be working with girls and their communities because we believe that in order to reduce girls’ vulnerabilities and promote a new reality where girls value themselves and are valued by those around them we need to produce an holistic change.
As part of our presence in Malawi we are partnering with DREAMS, an ambitious $385 million partnership to reduce HIV infections among adolescent girls and young women in 10 sub-Saharan African countries. With support from the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Girl Effect, Johnson & Johnson, Gilead, and ViiV Healthcare, DREAMS is delivering a core package that combines evidence-based approaches that go beyond the health sector, addressing the structural drivers that directly and indirectly increase girls’ HIV risk, including poverty, gender inequality, sexual violence, and a lack of education.
As part of this project, we are looking for a Senior Manager, Gender Programming, to be based in country to provide technical advice, assistance and guidance in girl-centered programming to our team and partners implementing this truly unique initiative. This role will work alongside a Brand Strategist and a Senior Evidence Manager to design a new brand and related activities aiming a creating a new reality for adolescent girls in Malawi.
