Country Director, Malawi Country Programme

Working with several partners and within the existing policy framework, the Country Director will strategically lead and direct the country team to develop and manage high quality, cost effective programmes which will achieve the expected outcomes and impact of the Sightsavers strategic plan and the national development goals.
Key responsibilities will be to play a leading role in developing, overseeing, implementing, reviewing and monitoring high profile, high value, multi-partner programmes, which will make a significant contribution to the elimination of Neglected Tropical Diseases in Malawi, specifically trachoma, onchocerciasis and LF.
The key areas of responsibilities for the position are:
  1. Strategic Leadership: Lead in development of country strategy and ensure strategic plans are developed and delivered in line with the overall organisational strategy and country priorities. In addition to representing the organisation in relevant fora, also lead in advocating for appropriate national policies and practices.
  2. Programme Management: Ensure development of strategic programmes that make use of available best practice and appropriate programme methodologies.
  3. People Management: Develop an effective country team and implement an efficient performance management and support system.
  4. Funding: Ensure that targets for the Country Financial Plan are met, in addition to ensuring full compliance of donor contracts including all terms, conditions and reporting requirements.
  5. Financial management: Ensure effective financial management, and cost effective use of organisation resources.
  6. Planning and delivery: Ensure effective planning and delivery of all components of the programme within budget and the deadlines set.
  7. Global Team Working: Collaborate with other teams and departments to contribute towards achievement of organisational objectives and promote organisational learning.
The ideal candidate, preferably a Malawi national, will possess degree level qualifications in social sciences, development studies, public health or a related field.
Extensive experience of working in an NGO environment that includes line and team management experience is required as is experience in program management, directing strategy development and implementation; program/project conceptualization, design and management. The ideal candidate will have experience working with health systems strengthening and be conversant with NTDs programming and funding mechanisms. He/she must be a strong leader, comfortable with great scrutiny, is bold, pragmatic, capable of seizing the initiative and of managing and dealing with strong external parties.
