Head of Project “Irrigation Development”
in Blantyre, Malawi
The position is to be filled from August 2016 and has an initial contract term until 28 February 2019. Deployment location is Blantyre, Malawi.
Aims and duties of the position
In this position you are responsible for overall coordination and implementation of the respective Welthungerhilfe project in Malawi in accordance with the framework specified regarding content, timing and financing. You are responsible for the planning, implementation and supervision of our irrigation project activities in Malawi.
Your most important duties:
  • Ensure that the project objectives are achieved
  • Ensure the construction of a rural irrigation scheme
  • Ensure that environmental management plans for the irrigation scheme are established and applied
  • Preparation of the required donor and internal reports
  • Ensure compliance with Welthungerhilfe internal and donor rules and regulations
  • Set up a monitoring and evaluation framework to track the progress of the project
  • Report to the Country Representative and the Regional Desk
  • Support of the country office in the further development of WASH-related projects
As a qualified applicant you will possess the following:
  • A university or polytechnical degree in the area of agriculture, civil engineering or a comparable qualification
  • Ideally, several years of experience in the setup of rural irrigation schemes
  • Extensive professional experience in the humanitarian context and in food security projects, preferably in the area
  • A high level of physical and mental resilience and readiness to travel to areas with volatile local conditions
  • Coordination and organisational skills, including the ability to work under pressure and in difficult local conditions
  • A very good command of English, both spoken and written
