Postdoctoral Researcher Malariology, Barcelona

Description
We seek a motivated postdoctoral researcher with a background in molecular or cellular biology and experience in next generation sequencing platforms and miRNAs.
  • Venue:
    Barcelona
  • Centres:
The Barcelona Center for International Health research and Center for Research on Environmental Epidemiology (CREAL) are internationally recognized as centers of excellence for education, research and service delivery in the field of tropical infectious diseases and environmental epidemiology. The Department of Malaria Physiopathology is currently running research projects aiming to identify microRNAs that could be used as biomarkers specific for severe infectious diseases such as pneumonia (bacterial or viral) and severe malaria, which are difficult to distinguish in developing countries where diagnostic methods are scarce.
  • Assignment:
The successful applicant will contribute to the development of methods to extract miRNAs from different biofluids and quantify them through massively parallel sequencing, to further apply these methods to the analysis of samples collected in malaria-endemic countries.
    • You will take over and manage projects on the characterization of miRNAs in different biofluids and the identification of those with a potential role as biomarkers for severe infectious diseases.
    • You will apply for competitive grants.
    • You will be involved and will interact with colleagues in CRESIB, CREAL and Center for Genomic Regulation (CRG) working on the clinical impact of infectious diseases and non-communicable diseases, as well as on the mechanisms contributing to the most severe forms of infections such as malaria and the function/biogenesis of miRNAs.
    • You will closely work with bio-informaticians.
    • You will coach Master and PhD students.
  • Profile:
    • You hold a relevant PhD in molecular biology, cell biology, or biochemistry.
    • You have extensive experience in next generation sequencing platforms and microRNAs; experience in malaria epidemiology is an asset.
    • Basic knowledge in bio-informatics is an asset.
    • You have good communication skills and are able to adapt to new environments.
    • You have excellent knowledge of English. Spanish will be an asset.
  • Salary and conditions:
    • An intellectually stimulating, international and socially committed environment, with room for personal initiative.
    • A full time contract for one year, with possibility of renewal. During this period you will apply for fellowships in national/international calls. Starting date: as soon as possible.
    • A salary set according to the pay scales of the CRESIB and CREAL.
  • Applications:
Send a CV and a motivation letter to agmayor@clinic.ub.es. For more information about this position, please contact Prof. Dr. Alfredo Mayor, Department of Malaria Phisiopathology (agmayor@clinic.ub.es, tel. +32 (0)3 247 63 54).
