Feature Writer, BBC Future

The writer  will report to the editor of the feature site but will also work closely with the deputy editor, the BBC.com managing editor and stakeholders at Global News. In the absence of the editor or deputy, they may be asked to assume responsibility for the site.

Role Responsibility

The writer will be responsible for producing regular, daily short-form blogs and occasional long-form features for BBC Future. They will have a demonstrated passion for science, technology and health. They will delight the internet every day, producing original sharp, witty blogs and stories that our audience want to read and share. These may be originations, “second day” stories or a piece activating the BBC archive. They will be socially-savvy, digitally literate with a hunger to make a name for themselves in the field. They will occasionally commission and edit material from freelancers, and may also oversee the editing and production of other content on the website as and when required. The role will require day-to-day liaison with the appropriate editors.

The Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will have:
Extensive digital experience required including knowledge of a CMS, HTML, Photoshop
Viral content
Social media
A recognised degree in a subject area related to BBC Future
Ideally a recognised qualification in journalism
Substantial experience in writing and – ideally commissioning – short-form and long-form content
Substantial experience of blogging and/or reporting
Substantial experience of working in a digital environment – including writing for an online audience, sourcing AV
Must have a deep understanding of social media and an ability to maximise its impact
Experience working as part of a global news organisation desirable
Must be entrepreneurial, a problem-solver, detailed reader and creative thinker.
