ActionAid Malawi is a locally registered non-governmental o under a the Company’s Act company limited by guarantee and an affiliate of Action Aid International, a federation of national organizations working in over 45 countries in Africa, Asia, America and Europe regions. ActionAid has been working in Malawi since 1991 and works in partnership with community based organizations, civil society, social movements, and governments across the world to fight and eradicate poverty, exclusion. We work with and support poor and excluded people in the struggle to and claim their rights. Action Aid’s work is focused around women’s rights, education and youth, food security, justice and governance, human security and in HIV and AIDS.
ActionAid Malawi has been approved as a Non-governmental Principal Recipient for the Joint Tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS Global Fund grant under the Global Fund New Funding Malawi is responsible for the January 2018 programmatic management of the non-biomedical component of the grant which runs from 1st December 2020.

Job title: Internal Auditor

Job Purpose
The Internal Auditor’s role is to assist in the provision of services that ensure resources received by ActionAid and its sub Recipients from the Global Fund are used in the most cost effective and efficient manner.
Key Responsibilities
Risk Management
  • Reviews risk matrices in the recipients and reports on adequacy and progress on implementing mitigation plans.
  • Identifies and agrees on new risks and advises finance and management
  • Writes reports with clear recommendations of key findings on performance in managing risks.

Audit Implementation
  • Performs value adding and risk based audits in organizations to verify adherence to AAM and donor policies and procedures, and laws and regulations of Malawi
  • Carries out physical checks on projects to verify existence and status of outputs in relation to reports
  • Reviews financial records and other reports, systems and controls maintained in all AAM offices and in Sub- Recipients
  • Reviews narrative reports against activities done in the Sub-Recipients
  • Carries out physical verification of assets a e with records maintained in the offices
  • Analyses resources used against output and outcomes of Sub-Recipients
  • Undertakes investigative assignments on fraud and irregularities at management requests and also follows up on regular audit findings

Audit Reporting
  • Provides timely reports with relevant recommendations to management to improve the control environment audit updates to the Head of Internal Audit during unit meetings
  • Reports on follow ups on previous recommendations

Investigations
  • Follows up on the whistle blowing register and monitors a possible investigations
  • Assesses whistle blowing issues and conducts preliminary investigations where necessary
  • Conducts full investigations at management request or when audit exercise reveals issues that require an investigation
  • Makes recommendations on investigations conducted
  • Follows up on adequacy of actions by management on investigation reports,

Qualifications, Skills and Competencies
  • Degree in accounting or its equivalent or professional qualifications such as ACCA, CIMA.
  • 3 years practical experience in accounting and finance of which at least 2 years should be in external or internal audit
  • NGO experience is an added advantage
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Knowledge of auditing standards
  • Knowledge of risk management and risk based approach methodologies
  • Knowledge of internal control design, implementation and monitoring systems
  • Knowledge of carrying out investigations
  • Ability to make strong and valuable recommendations to management to improve efficiency.
