The International Potato Center (CIP) seeks an experienced project manager for the UKAID-funded SUSTAIN project (Scaling Up Orange-fleshed Sweetpotatoes through Agriculture & Nutrition) in Malawi. Under this project, CIP is committed to reaching all farmers in the districts of Salima, Dowa, Mzimba, Nkhotakota, Nkhata Bay, Rumphi, Karonga and Chitipa with nutritious and resilient sweetpotatoes through the promotion, evaluation, adoption, production, diffusion and utilization of five new Orange-fleshed Sweetpotato (OFSP) varieties.

The SUSTAIN Malawi Project Manager will be based in Lilongwe and will be a part of CIP’s country team working in all districts of Malawi. S/he will also be a member of the regional SUSTAIN team and CIP’s global sweetpotato program. The Project Manager will report to the CIP Malawi Country Manager and to the SUSTAIN Program Leader (based in Uganda).
The SUSTAIN Malawi Project Manager will:
- Manage the SUSTAIN Malawi project
a. Support CIP administration and finance staff
b. Manage sub grantees
c. Report Internally and externally - Support and strengthen an implementing partner network
a. Manage current partners and identifying new partners
b. Maintain partner communication
c. Coordinate the ongoing training of implementing partner staff - Ensure that all farm families have access to new OFSP varieties
a. Coordinate the summer rainy and winter wetland activities
b. Ensure data collection, archiving, analysis and reporting - Support a strong nutrition focus
a. Coordinate the support from the SUSTAIN Nutrition Advisor
b. Engage nutrition partners through Concern Worldwide
Qualifications - Malawian citizen
- Demonstrated enthusiasm and commitment to Malawi’s agricultural development
- MSc in a relevant subject including agronomy, agricultural economics, project management
- At least 5 and preferably 10 years relevant project management experience
- Experience in programmatic, financial, administrative and staff management
- Demonstrated leadership skills combined with ability to work as a member of a team
- Willingness to travel in country and in the region
- Experience working with farmers and especially women farmers
- A commitment to grass roots participatory and gender approaches
- Experience working with and through diverse partners
- Ability to see the big picture and at the same time take care of the details
