SUMMARY:
Counterpart International is currently seeking a Food Processing Specialist to implement the food processing components of the anticipated five-year USAID Feed the Future Ag Diversification for Incomes and Nutrition project in Malawi. The five-year project will improve the nutritional status of women and children under five, and build the capacity of Malawian CSOs engaged in agriculture and nutrition activities. The proposed project seeks to reduce poverty and stunting in eight districts of Central and Southern Malawi through inclusive sustainable growth in the agriculture sector and improved agriculture and behavior change interventions in rural communities. The Food Processing Specialist will be responsible for capacity building of agribusinesses and farmers organizations around food processing techniques through the design and implementation of training activities and resources. Individuals with current authorization to work in Malawi are strongly preferred. This is a full-time position based in Malawi with regional travel. This position will report to the Component Lead.

• Provide workshops for farmers in the processing of multi-purpose legumes for climate-smart and nutrition-sensitive improvement of farm productivity.
• Build capacity of agricultural enterprises to perform market-oriented processing for value addition of target commodities.
• Assist agribusiness entrepreneurs and enterprises, including farmers’ organizations, in identifying and applying appropriate value addition and processing technologies.
• Train agribusinesses and farmers in fortification processes.
• Help to establish and/or strengthen community-based groups, associations, cooperatives, and enterprises for processing.
• Provide technical and business development services to food processing groups, associations, cooperatives, and enterprises to ensure they are functional, sustainable, and able to meet food safety and regulatory standards.
• Make certain all activities ensure gender integration and social inclusion.

• Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture, Food Sciences, Nutrition, Food Engineering, or related field
• Minimum of five (5) years’ experience in agro-processing, food safety, preservation and storage, agriculture, and/or fortification.
• Experience designing and conducting training modules.
• Strong technical knowledge of nutrition-dense foods in Malawi, aflatoxin reduction, value chains, and nutrition.
• Experience conducting capacity building with agribusinesses and/or community groups.
• Knowledge of gender integration and social inclusion best practices.
