REGIONAL PARTNERSHIP AND INFLUENCE SPECIALIST


CARE has a new and exciting focus to multiply impact for 10 million small scale farmers and their families in Southern Africa in Food Nutrition Security and Climate Change Resilience. This position has an external focus in building relationships and influence in Southern Africa with intergovernmental bodies such as Africa Union (AU) and New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD), Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Program (CAADP) but also with Institute for Center for Research in Agroforestry (ICRAF), International Maize and Wheat Improvement Centre (CIMMYT), Climate Change and Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS) and other relevant technical partners and civil society groups, all to contribute to increased food security, nutritional well-being and climate change resilience for small scale food producers, particularly women and their families. There are strong components of relationship building, deep understanding of gender and advocacy at technical and strategic levels to increase impact.
CARE is seeking a talented Regional Partnership and Influence Specialist who must have strong experience in Southern Africa partnerships and advocacy campaigns related to food nutrition security and climate change resilience for women small scale farmers. The candidate must know how to link on-the-ground evidence from CARE programming to advocacy messages in close coordination with others to meet Africa-wide objectives and Sustainable Development Goals.
The position is to partner with those who are working towards sustainable agriculture, climate change resilience and nutrition for women and their families. S/he will report to the Managing Deputy Regional Director for Southern Africa and play a central role in the development and implementation of partnership and advocacy strategies. S/he will contribute to the broader strategic, programmatic, fundraising and communications work of the Southern Africa Food Nutrition Security and Climate Change Resilience Initiative.
Ideally, the candidate should be from the region, able to speak English, French and/or Portuguese and be willing to travel 25-40% of his/her time. Location will be discussed but preference is within Southern Africa, preferably linked to a CARE country office or South Africa.
Primary Responsibilities:
Develop and implement CARE International's partnership and advocacy strategy for the Southern Africa food nutrition security and climate change work, in coordination with partners and with CARE Country Offices (COs) in the Southern Africa region
Develop and maintain relationships in coalitions, with civil society actors, intergovernmental fora, research/academic institutions to advance food nutrition security and climate change resilience in Southern Africa for CARE’s work
Influence and advocate with others on issues related to food and nutrition security and climate change resilience within and beyond CARE, ensuring effective coordination and alignment of regional and national-focused influencing work, with partners and with CARE Country Offices
Whenever possible, identify evidence and potential for fundraising opportunities to expand advocacy, programming and partnership possibilities. Follow up those opportunities with concept notes/proposals where possible and in collaboration with country offices
Ensure CARE is actively engaged and visible in support of intergovernmental fora, civil society discussions, decisions and frameworks to advance climate change resilience and food nutrition security
Develop internal and external communications on CARE’s progress in partnerships and regional influence
Perform other duties as assigned
Primary Skills:
Master's degree (or a combination of Bachelor's degree and relevant work experience) in one of the areas of agriculture, food and nutrition security, climate change, natural resources management, gender in development or international relations
At least ten (10) years of work experience in partnership and advocacy work, preferably in food nutrition security and climate change resilience
Proven ability to produce advocacy materials and to develop mechanisms to share and manage advocacy information and knowledge
Understanding of and familiarity with all relevant multilateral institutions, civil society and related decision-making processes as well as knowledge of food nutrition security and climate change resilience issues in Southern Africa
Knowledge and understanding of gender in development issues
Demonstrated experience of undertaking policy and advocacy work in Africa at the regional and/or national levels, preferably as part of civil society coalitions
Strong knowledge of international and African standards, institutions and processes relating to food nutrition security and climate change resilience
Strong understanding of the key players in food nutrition security and climate change
Strong analytical skills, ability to think strategically, with a keen eye for accuracy and detail
Experience with providing capacity building and/or technical support to civil society
Excellent writing and oral communication skills
Knowledge and understanding of technicalities of gender in development issues
Excellent organizational skills; ability to plan and organize work effectively, to meet tight deadlines and juggle multiple priorities
Strong interpersonal skills, and ability develop effective working relationships in a multicultural environment
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, but also to maintain effective working relationships with colleagues who are based in various countries
Strong English writing and presentation skills
Adaptability and the commitment to work within a small, flexible team
