About the Organization: 
The MicroLoan Foundation is a microfinance charity working in Malawi and Zambia. It provides microfinance and training to groups of rural women, helping them to start small businesses and work their way out of poverty.
About the Job: 
MicroLoan Foundation is seeking a Head - Operations and Fundraising Development for Africa. S/he will consolidate and build the operations in Malawi and Zambia and develop into new Sub Saharan African countries.
Tasks and Responsibilities: 
  • Operational plans and budgets: Develop and implement the annual budgets and related plans for each country, ensuring that required profitability and sustainability is achieved. supporting the organization's strategy;
  • Reserve banks: Ensure that the charity maintains required standards by the reserve banks;
  • Processes and procedures: To work with the UK and local management teams to refine and improve internal processes, controls, and operating procedures. (IT, MIS, HR, internal audit, field force, training, and social impact measurement);
  • Team building and leadership: Build, upgrade, and motivate the African teams. Recruit, manage, and develop staff in Africa where necessary with the local CEO’s and work closely but independently from the African trustees;
  • Governance: Work with the local Boards and be present at the UK Trustee Boards , to report as appropriate. Responsible for preparing the African Board papers for the bi-monthly trustee meetings;
  • Fundraising: Work with the support of the UK Head of fundraising, to identify, and develop opportunities for African funding and to ensure there is an appropriate match of in market needs;
  • Work closely with the UK team on large and multilateral fundraising bidsand provide operational input for general fundraising asks and communications;
  • Social Enterprise: Manage the development of the ‘social enterprise’ ‘microfinance plus’ concept whilst ensuring that it delivers social mission and an opportunity for MLF clients to progress to ‘higher value’ businesses. (e.g. agriculture);
  • Partnerships and ambassadorial: Represent the charity as required in Africa and/or the UK. Build partnerships as appropriate with other organisations (NGO’s, government bodies, donors and partners) with appropriate heads of departments;
  • Reporting – Ensure financial& operational reports are generated by the Malawi and Zambia teams on time. Strategy & new Countries: Develop and implement the appropriate strategy for individual countries and select, priorities and research new ones.
Qualifications: 
  • Proven track record (greater than 5 years) of managing growth and quality in a MFI- ideally within Africa;
  • Proven track record in a strategic and operational role;
  • Excellent project management, budgeting, and resource planning skills;
  • Experience of managing significant budgets;
  • Robust financial numeracy;
  • Experience of supporting large funding bids (e.g. DFID, EU), sourcing local grant money, and liaising with funders;
  • Extensive experience in relationship management and partnership development;
  • Experience of recruiting and nurturing high performing teams;
  • Ability to create and maintain accurate and timely performance measurement and reporting systems;
  • Passion& interest for microfinance and the MLF’s social mission;
  • Excellent communication skills with high emotional intelligence;
  • Able and committed to live in Africa and travel as required.
