UN Coordination Analyst

Background

Under the direct supervision of the Head of the UN Resident Coordinator’s Office and the overall oversight of the Resident Coordinator, the UN Coordination Analyst will support the UN Country Team through the provision of political, social and economic analysis. The Coordination Analyst will also play a critical role in supporting the UN and Government of Malawi deliver development assistance more effectively, through the full implementation of the Development Cooperation Strategy (DCS) and the United Nations Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF.) The UN Coordination Analyst will work in close collaboration with UNCT members, programme and operations teams of the UN Agencies, Government officials, technical advisors and experts, multi-lateral and bi-lateral donors and civil society.

Duties and Responsibilities

Advice and support to RC and UNCT on political, economic and developmental issues.
  • Ensures synthesized and relevant political/ economic and social analysis is collated and communicated to RC, UNCT and relevant stakeholders on a regular basis. 
Ensures effective support to UNCT in implementation of the UNDAF focusing on achievement of the following results:
  • Facilitating the smooth functioning of UNDAF Results Groups;
  • Coordinating 6 monthly and annual reports on UNDAF progress, including the RC’s annual report, the UNDG annual report and Joint Strategy Meetings;
  • Identification of strengths and weaknesses in UN programming in the context of UNDAF, UN System reform, MDGs and Post MDG’s;
  • Provision of advice on adjusting strategies and implementation modalities.
Supports effective functioning of the Government of Malawi dialogue structures, including Sector Working Groups (SWG’s)
  • Supports preparations for and follow up of High Level coordination meetings;
  • Supports an increasingly coordinated approach to UN presence at SWG’s;
  • Supports an increasingly coordinated approach to the UN’s engagement with key government ministries.
Ensures implementation of the UN partnership strategy, including increased joint programming for UNDAF implementation focusing on achievement of the following results:
  • Development of partnerships with IFI’s, government institutions, bi-lateral and multi-lateral donors, private sector, civil society;
  • Analysis and research of information on donors, preparation of reports on donor strategies;
  • Identification of opportunities for increased joint programming and support for their implementation;
  • Management of the various and emerging One Fund windows.
Ensures facilitation of knowledge building and management focusing on achievement of the following results:
  • Ensures that the RCO plays an effective role as a knowledge hub for the UNCT, Development Partners and Government of Malawi;
  • Sound contributions to knowledge networks and communities of practice.
Impact of Results 

The key results have an impact on the success of the UN Country Team activities.
In particular, the key results have an impact on the design and implementation of UN programme activities,
strengthening of strategic partnerships for UNDAF implementation.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:
  •  Master’s Degree or equivalent in Economics, Social Sciences, International Relations, Political Sciences or related field.
Experience: 
  • At least 2 years of post Master’s relevant experience at the national or international level in providing management advisory services;
  • Hands-on experience in design, monitoring and evaluation of development projects;
  • Knowledge about the UN and RC systems would be an advantage;
  • Experience in the usage of computers and office software packages, and experience in handling of web based management systems.
Language:
  • Excellent command of the English language is a requirement.
