Background
UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Support the development of a strategic plan for the PWC
- Support capacity building of PWC members through trainings and workshops (including but not limited to: key functions and entry points, best practices, self-assertiveness training and leadership, communication and advocacy skills)
- Assist with trainings on gender responsive budgeting, gender related commitments and gender mainstreaming in policy making
- Support documentation on and analysis of best practices of the PWC and subsequent support to production of annual report and launch
- Help develop and/or implement a programme for PWC on increased political participation of women, including the issue of retention. This includes technical support to review and develop a plan to be included in 50:50 campaign
- Support the preparation of PWC participation to the CSW59/B+20 in NY, including activities and follow-up
- Assist in organising one exchange visit in the region with one other PWC during 2015
- Support PWC's advocacy role and missions around the country to address key issues around girl child, education, child marriage, violence and economic empowerment
- Support regular policy and legislative briefings on relevant Bills before the House
- Support updates and sessions with the MoGCDSW for further strategizing
- Support to organising sessions in Parliament on EVAWG/VAC and GBV as well on gender inequality and women's empowerment
- Assist PWC meetings with Standing Committees on a regular basis to discuss ongoing legislative concerns
- Support advocacy efforts for increased political participation and leadership of women

- Communication: Excellent communication skills, including the ability to pose questions, listen, evaluate and capture opinions, suggestions and comments, both orally and in writing, in a clear and persuasive style tailored to match different stakeholders;
- Client orientation: Ability to establish and maintain productive partnerships with national partners and pro-activeness in identifying of beneficiaries and partners' needs, and matching them to appropriate solutions;
- High interpersonal skills
Functional competencies:
- Ability to communicate and co-ordinate with local and international partners and stakeholders;
- Strong analytical, writing and communication skills on issues related to good governance, gender, human rights, etc.;
- Good computer skills in Windows environment, knowledge of internet communications and command of MS Office applications (Word, Excel, Power Point);
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with people of different national and cultural backgrounds, gender and diverse views, while maintaining impartiality and objectivity.
Required Skills and Experience
Education/Academic Qualifications:
- Master's degree in one of the following areas: social sciences, gender studies, human rights, political sciences, development studies and international relations
Work experience:
- A minimum of 5 years of professional experience in leading and managing positions responsible for prepartion of reports including on political context, human rights, advocating on human rights issues, institutional relations and development etc.;
- Experience and knowledge on central government, parliament and international organizations will be considered an asset.
- Strong leadership skills, notably coaching, mentoring and coordinating skills;
- Strong background in interacting and coordinating activities with media and Public Relation experience;
- Language requirements: Excellent written English and Chichewa
Knowledge and skills:
- Excellent knowledge of the project/programme management for parliamentary support
- Knowledge and demonstrated experience with RBM
- Knowledge, particularly in the areas of human rights-based approaches to programming, gender equality and women's empowerment, Results Based Management (RBM) principles, environmental mainstreaming, climate change and adaptation, is highly desirable.
- Excellent knowledge of the social, political and economic situation of Malawi
- Substantive knowledge of development issues
- Knowledge of UN Women and its mandate in the area of gender related governance and programme development
- Excellent analytical and conceptual thinking
- Good interpersonal and communication skills
Languages:
- Excellent written and spoken English and Chichewa.
- Excellent report writing skills as well as communication and interviewing skills in English and Chichewa.
