The African Union was established as a unique Pan African continental body. It is charged with the responsibility of spearheading Africa's rapid integration and sustainable development by promoting unity, solidarity, cohesion and cooperation among the peoples of Africa and African States; as well as developing a new world wide partnership. Its Headquarters is located at Addis Ababa, capital city of Ethiopia.
In seeking to achieve this objective, the African Union intends to strengthen its capacity to deliver by, among others, the reinforcement of its organizational structure and expertise.
The Commission of the African Union invites applicants who are citizens of Member States for a position of CONSTITUTIONALISM AND RULE OF LAW OFFICER in the Department for Political Affairs.

Major Duties and Responsibilities
The Constitutionalism and Rule of law Officer shall perform the following tasks:
  • Assist the Head of Constitutionalism and rule of law Cluster of the African Governance Platform, in the operationalization and functionality of the Cluster;

  • Assist in planning, preparing and implementing programme activities related to Constitutionalism and rule of law, as well as providing technical assistance to Member States;
  • Assist in drafting support document for the monitoring and implementation of decisions and programmes on Constitutionalism and rule of law;
  • Assist in developing concept document for a better coverage of issues related to Constitutionalism for further implementation of the African Charter on Democracy, Election and governance;
  • Assist in building the capacity of the Cluster members in maintaining appropriate working relations with AU Organs and partners of African Union on issues related to Constitutionalism and rule of law ;
  • Provide advice on Constitutionalism and rule of law issues, including input into official communications, organising seminars, workshops and other related activities in the field of constitutionalism an rule of law and other documents;
  • Create and maintain information and document tracking system;
  • Perform any other relevant tasks assigned by supervisor.
Qualifications and Work Experience Required
All successful Candidates must have at least 5 years of relevant working experience in the area of International relations and Public law, including experience in legal affairs, capacity building, technical cooperation activities, planning and field operations Bachelor's Degree in Law, Political Science, International Relations or other disciplines related to the major duties.

  • Computer literacy;
  • Ability to work in a team and maintain team spirit.
  • Ability to work under pressure and act with discretion in a politically sensitive environment hence establish good working relationship both with Government authorities and colleagues
  • Excellent drafting and reporting skills;
  • Good communication and negotiating skills;
  • Good planning and organizational skills
Tenure of Appointment
The appointment will be made on a fixed term contract for a period of One (1) year, of which the first three (3) month will be considered as a probationary period.
Language Requirement
  • Proficiency in one of the AU working languages (English, French, Arabic and Portuguese) is a must.
  • Knowledge of second or all of the other working languages would be an added advantage

Remuneration
The salary attached to the position is a fixed monthly lump sum of US$ 6,002.83 inclusive of all allowances for internationally recruited staff, and US$ 5,035.86 inclusive of all allowances for locally recruited staff.
