1. Background and Context
By utilizing a well-crafted, creative and child-friendly storytelling approach, UNICEF Mozambique annual report will highlight CO achievements in an accessible, human and context-appropriate manner, using simple, child-friendly language and building on concrete results and outcomes from the point of view of beneficiaries and partners.
2.Methodology and Technical Approach
The writer and/or illustrator will work with the Communication, Advocacy, Participation and Partnerships (CAPP) Section to map out the arc of the narrative so as to clearly reflect office-wide milestone achievements related to 10 priority areas. The stories will be augmented throughout the report with illustrations, “boxed” information, and infographics, the contents of which the writer will craft with UNICEF inputs.
3. Activities and Tasks
· The writer/illustrator will collect and map office key outcomes/achievements on the 10 priority areas for 2014, in close cooperation with sections and CAPP, including quantitative data.
· The writer will develop a child-friendly storyline/narrative thread covering the themes in the 10 office-wide priorities, plotting key achievements for 2014 throughout, and including where possible general information about UNICEF Mozambique work so as to introduce young (and old) readers to our business, to result in a coherent and compelling narrative for children, using (fictional) main characters that are context- and culturally appropriate, while keeping all data/information about UNICEF achievements, challenges, opportunities, solutions, the local context of the country and culture, etc based in fact.
· The narrative must be accompanied by child-appropriate and creative illustrations that illustrate both narrative elements, as well as achievements/data.
4. Deliverables and Timeframe
Deliverables:
The writer and/or illustrator delivers a children’s story (standard annual report length, seehttp://annualreport.unicef.org.mz/), including illustrations of the main characters as well as other narrative elements and achievements such as data/financial information, that tell the story of UNICEF Mozambique achievements in 2014, covering 10 priority areas. The narrative/illustrations must include a cover illustration, headings, subheadings, and captions.
Timeframe:
· List of achievement elements (with accurate data where appropriate) that will be covered in the narrative, outline of main characters and story arc/storyline, illustrated storyboard – 6 March
· First draft (text only) – 25 March
· All illustrations, including cover, main characters, financial graphs – 3 April
· Final version text and illustrations – 10 April
5. Qualifications and Specialized Knowledge
· Relevant educational background, or proven experience
· The writer must have a proven record of excellent research, interview and writing skills for children.
· The illustrator must have a proven record of excellent creative skills work in children’s illustrations.
· Fluency in English is required,
· Portuguese is desired.
