Founded in 1961, Project Concern International (PCI) is a non-profit health and humanitarian aid organization dedicated to preventing disease, improving community health, and promoting sustainable development (in Malawi since 2007). PCI, with funding from USAID, is implementing a new five year holistic food security program “NjiraProject – Pathways to Sustainable Food Security” (Njira) in the Balaka and Machinga Districts of Malawi.

Job Summary:
Reporting to the Deputy Chief of Party, the Livestock Advisor will be tasked with the overall responsibility to develop a detailed Livestock strategy, in line with the Njira Project’s related objectives, for mobilizing farmers and providing training and technical assistance in a variety of livestock initiatives, all aimed at reducing food insecurity through sustainable livestock interventions and market led strategies. The Advisor will be responsible for building and managing a local team, as well as a network(s) of farmers. He/she must show how specific interventions will increase income and improve the nutrition of ultra-poor and poor farmer households within a set timeframe.
- Minimum of Bachelor’s degree, preferably with a Masters, in a field related to Livestock or related field such as: agri-business, agricultural economics, , or agriculture marketing;
- Minimum of 10 years of experience working with livestock related value chains and associated agribusinesses;
- Ability to identify and support the development of market driven linkages between Njira’s targeted smallholder farmers, input suppliers, agro-processors, equipment traders and others;
- Knowledge of fodder production and storage, as well as the potential environmental impact;
- Experience in designing, and implementing market development programs;
- Strong understanding of livestock value chains and the ability to lead value chain analysis, mapping, and training initiatives
- Experience in working with and/or establishing village based savings and loan groups to provide financing to livestock farmers;
- Ability to engage the formal financial sector to facilitate access to credit by smallholder farmers and agribusiness along targeted value chains
- Demonstrated ability to mobilize, organize and work with smallholder farmers and community groups, as well as to collaborate with government and other stakeholders;
- Experience with mobile phone technologies used to communicate market information or, to provide extension support to farmers;
- Experience working with a complex multi-sectoral program;
- Excellent planning skills, must be well organized and capable of completing multiple tasks on deadline, results oriented;
- Excellent English and Chichewa speaking, reading and writing skills required;
- Good report writing, presentation and excellent computer skills (at least MS Office products e.g. excel, word, and power point)
- Good supervisory and teamwork skills;
- Heavy local travel and overnight stays in rural areas expected.
