Position Summary:
IHI is seeking a full time Project Director (“Director”) and Improvement Advisor to be based in Lilongwe, Malawi as part of a new project designed to reduce preterm mortality nationally across Malawi. The Director will support the local partner organization (“Partner”) in developing program design, execution and evaluation, providing both technical and operational support to the Partner implementing the work. The Director will be IHI’s official representative for the project and will have overall responsibility for developing its outcomes. The Director is additionally responsible for maintaining communication between all relevant parties, including appropriate officials from Malawian Ministry of Helath, the donor, the Partner Organization, and IHI Head Office. The Director reports to the Executive Director of IHI’s African Operations.
Position Responsibilities
Quality improvement
- Develop the project’s measurable aims and goals
- Create the project technical framework, including: Study design, Driver diagrams, conceptual models, and change packages; System maps; Measurement strategies, including guidance on building operational definitions, applying statistical process control (SPC) methods, and interpreting analytic results; Other pertinent supportive materials, such as examples of aim statements, PDSAs, and graphs
- Coordinate the tracking of progress towards meeting project goals
- Develop curriculums for meetings and training sessions
- Teach and coach on all aspects of improvement theory and methods
- Coordinate with project evaluators
Clinical:
- Provide input to the application of antenatal cortical steroids, chlorhexidine, and other aspects of the neonatal bundle to ensure that the project is executing a cutting edge, comprehensive medical intervention
Operational:
- Hold responsibility for project success and timely achievement of all milestones, deliverables, financial accountability and other reporting requirements. This includes the development of work plans, financial reports, and donor reports
- Lead the development of a programme strategy, execution, monitoring and sustainable exit
- Provide direction and guidance for all technical and managerial aspects of the programme
- Regularly communicate with senior leaders of IHI, Malawian Ministry of Health, the donor, and the Partner
Position Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Advanced project management skills, including being detail-focused and managing towards aggressive timelines
- Ability and skill to drive and achieve quality results within complex, time constrained goals
- Communication skills (both interpersonal and written), including superior presentation skills
- Ability to strategize and facilitate critical thinking with members of the team
- Negotiation, decision making, and delegation skills
- Drive to effectively develop self and others
- Must be an approachable mentor, employee advocate, and team leader
- Able to actively support, communicate, and teach the unique culture and values of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement
- Must be able to travel within Malawi 50% time and internationally 10% time
Position Qualifications:
- Advanced degree required, clinical degree highly preferred
- Must have seven to ten years experience working internationally within a complex, professional environment
- Three to five years of experience leading teams of professionals
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and data analytic software is required
- Prior quality improvement experience preferred, but training can be provided
