Sustainable Energy Management Unit Manager, Malawi

  1. Concern Universal Malawi has established a Sustainable Energy Unit which builds upon the organisations’ experience in sustainable energy across a number of country programmes including Malawi, The Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Nigeria, Mozambique and Kenya. These and other similar energy initiatives meet a fundamental need in rural communities for improved access to clean household energy for cooking, warmth and lighting and energy provision at public institutions, and have considerable scope for scale up.
  2. The Unit has the aim of operating as a social enterprise focused on the triple bottom line of economic, social and environmental measures of organizational success. The focus of the Unit is on i.) Ensuring quality and expanding the production of carbon credit generating fuel efficient stoves, ii.) Conducting wider research into other areas of sustainable energy (such as biogas and solar) to identify promising interventions which can be piloted and scaled-up in Malawi, iii.) Lead the Concern Universal country programme in all areas related to sustainable energy, iv.) Create linkages between suppliers and users of sustainable energy.
Job Purpose
  • Reporting to the Performance and Impact Unit Manager and Head of Research the Sustainable Energy Management Unit Manager is responsible for the strategic direction and ensuring the financial and technical sustainability of the SEMU.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
  • Develop, implement and monitor a SEMU strategy and a SEMU business plan,
  • Proactively identify opportunities, develop proposals and securing funding for the work of the SEMU.
  • Building CU capacity in carbon projects and avail of carbon financing opportunities.
  • Provide technical support and guidance to projects that have sustainable energy and/or carbon components.
  • Create linkages and relationships with key strategic partners and stakeholders.
  • Embed innovation and business approaches into the management and work of the SEMU.
  • Undertake any other duties that contribute to the sustainability and viability of the SEMU.
Qualifications, Experience, Skills and Competencies
  • A degree in any area related to sustainable energy, carbon financing, engineering, sociology, anthropology, business while a Masters’ or PhD would be an advantage.
  • Minimum of 3 years in the energy or carbon industry.
  • Able to demonstrate experience of working with rural energy or sustainable energy programmes.
  • Have an excellent working knowledge of the social, environmental and technical problems facing rural and urban communities in access sustainable and affordable energy.
  • Implement and sustain an effective monitoring and evaluation system.
  • Excellent communication, coordination and facilitation skills are essential.
  • Respect and empathy for rural communities is vital.
  • Analytical thinking, problem solving and decision-making ability
  • Evidence of budgeting and project planning skills and experience.
