Organizational Profile: Partners In Health (PIH) is a non-profit corporation based in Boston, Massachusetts, whose mission is to provide a preferential option for the poor in health care. Through service delivery, training, research, and advocacy, PIH works globally to bring the benefits of modern science to those most in need and to serve as an antidote to despair. PIH currently has programs in Haiti, Peru, Guatemala, Mexico, Russia, Rwanda, Lesotho, Malawi, Burundi, Kazakhstan, the Dominican Republic, and Boston. Abwenzi Pa Za Umoyo (APZU) is a sister organization of Partners In Health, an international NGO committed to the pursuit of health and justice for the poor and marginalized. APZU is transforming healthcare delivery in Neno District, one of the poorest and most remote districts in Malawi. Through 11 health centers and two hospital, Lisungwi Community Hospital and Neno District Hospital, APZU and the Malawi Ministry of Health work shoulder-to-shoulder to provide free health care to a population of 147,000. General Responsibilities: Working in close collaboration with the Director of Operations and Operations Manager. The Operations Volunteer will be responsible for provision of support to Operations for Upper and Lower Neno departments: transport, logistics, warehouse, and Distribution wherever necessary. This diverse and dynamic position works to strengthen systems striving to see that APZU becomes an ever more efficient, well-organized and cost-saving organization in order to maximize value for our patients.
Specific Responsibilities: Transport
  • Support the implementation of an online system for organization-wide fleet management and transport schedules.
  • Analysis of fleet data, including mileage against fuel usage and trip scrutiny. Stock Management
  • Support Warehouse Officer to oversee stock management system.
  • Provide support in the monitoring of stock balances and tracking consumption of project resources including office supplies, food stores, vehicle supplies, drugs and medical supplies, and other project materials.
  • Support regular weekly spot checks of warehouse stocks and full inventory counts on a quarterly basis.
  • Support implementation of Open Boxes software for clinical and nonclinical stock in both Upper and Lower Neno health facilities. Infrastructure
  • Support infrastructure record maintenance and create a suitable preventative maintenance plan for all Lisungwi equipment and facilities. Additional activities
  • Provide regular reports to the Director of Operations and Lower Neno Operations Manager.
  • Any other duties assigned by Operations Manager or Operations Director.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree required; background/interest in social science, area studies or public health preferred.
  • Substantial experience supporting project operations in rural areas
  • Strong communication, organizational and writing skills, and excellent command of written and spoken English
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Flexibility and ability to respond to shifting priorities in a fast-paced work environment
  • Ability to differentiate between problems that can be solved without input from APZU leadership and those which require leadership notification and attention
  • Ability to work well in a dynamic team environment alongside health workers, senior management team, support staff, and patients
  • Willingness to live and work full-time in a rural setting
  • Strong sense of humor is helpful and desired
