The Department of Energy and Climate Change is responsible for ensuring the UK has secure, affordable energy and for the UK’s role in domestic and international efforts to avoid dangerous climate change. The Department supports the Secretary of State and the Ministerial team to deliver the Government’s energy and climate change policies. The Department currently has three priorities:
- Driving investment in the UK’s energy infrastructure and supporting growth.
- Helping households and businesses take control of their energy bills.
- Reducing greenhouse gas emissions from the UK and internationally.
DECC is recruiting talented social researchers to join its dynamic social research and evaluation community. Candidates need to demonstrate an excellent grasp of research/evaluation methods and an ability to communicate with impact, but it is not necessary to have prior knowledge of energy efficiency and heating issues.
The first Senior Research Officer post will be part of the Central Analysis Directorate that works closely with the Household Energy Efficiency Directorate in a range of social research and analysis. A second possible post will support the development of policies to increase low carbon heating with a chance to undertake modelling and economics project if you possess the appropriate quantitative skills.
Working with the Principal Evaluation Lead or the Principle Research Officer will include:
- The continuing development of the theoretical framework underpinning evaluation
- Shaping and developing a programme of evaluation research
- Commissioning and managing a range of externally commissioned quantitative and qualitative research projects and making effective links with other relevant research areas
- Ensuring that research and evaluation products have maximum impact
- Engaging with other policy programmes and related evaluation plans across DECC and the wider research community
- Contributing to the development of DECC’s wider evidence base on consumer attitudes, behaviours and consumer engagement
- Identifying policy evidence needs, applying techniques commonly used within government and the local team (training will be provided where needed)
- Contributing to a long term evidence strategy and taking ownership for part of this
- Designing and commissioning a range of research to meet research needs
- Working closely with other analysts in multi-disciplinary projects
- Embed research into the policy development cycle and develop new ways of working;
- (dependent on skillset) Undertake modelling and cost benefit analysis
