Associate, Drug Access Team

Overview:
One of the hallmarks of the Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI) is simultaneous and intensive engagement on the demand and supply sides of the market to improve access to medicines and diagnostics for patients in developing countries.  CHAI’s Drug Access Team (DAT) works to address supply-side barriers to access and to foster a healthy marketplace to ensure the sustainable supply of essential medicines at lower prices, while CHAI’s country teams partner with national governments to strengthen the systems required to deliver treatment.

CHAI Swaziland is seeking a highly motivated individual with outstanding credentials, analytical ability, and communication skills for the position of Drug Access Associate on the CHAI Swaziland Access Program. Reporting to the Access Program Manager, the Associate will be responsible for a wide variety of tasks, from quantitative analysis to collaborating with stakeholders to gain consensus on proposed recommendations. The Associate must be well versed in the costs, efficacy and side effects of diverse drug regimens and formulations. Working with other Access team members, the Drug Access associate will be expected to initiate work plans to address these issues rapidly and with limited guidance.

Responsibilities:
  • Liaise with various disease programs (e.g. Swaziland National ART Program and National TB Control Program) to identify areas of engagement relating to improvements in supply chain, data integrity, market intelligence, forecasting and planning
  • Coordinate CHAI Access team’s technical assistance to the Ministry of Health (MoH) Central Medical Stores (CMS), to ensure coordinated and complementary support across HIV, PMTCT, TB and Malaria
  • Provide technical assistance for analyses on the roll-out of new country guidelines and uptake of new formulations and develop interventions to overcome identified barriers to the roll out of these formulations
  • Strengthen the capacity of the MoH to utilize robust forecasting practices across HIV, PMTCT, TB, Malaria and other essential medicines, including linking these forecasts to MoH tenders and orders on a regular basis
  • Provide technical assistance to CMS on resolving pharmaceutical procurement and supply chain-related challenges that act as barriers to the access of ARVs and TB medications
  • Support the expansion of the Data Management Unit (DMU) from HIV to other disease areas (PMTCT, TB, Malaria and Essential Medicines) and increase the skills set within the DMU staff on data quality and order validation
  • Improve systems that ensure the availability of ARVs, TB and other essential medicines at the central and facility level, and support the implementation of a sustainable process for data and commodity management
  • Remain current on relevant information about ARVs, TB, Malaria and other essential medicines, including globally recommended regimens, dosing, toxicities, etc. 
  • Perform other duties as required
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree/tertiary degree required in business or health-related fields
  • Minimum of three years of professional experience required (ideally with increasing responsibilities & demonstrated career progression), with preference for experience in business or public health-related analysis and modeling
  • Strong problem solving, analytical, and quantitative skills, including experience with MS Excel and PowerPoint
  • Ability to navigate complex government processes and favorably influence decision-making in a professional and collaborative manner
  • Demonstrated ability to perform consistently at a high level in unstructured, high-pressure situations
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously, set priorities, and work independently and flexibly with a strong commitment to excellence and limited supervision
  • Strong written and oral communication skills in English
