The Country Director (also known as Country Program Leader) represents PATH in South Africa and leads the organization in country. S/he provides the integrated view of PATH to South Africa and of the country back to PATH. The Country Director mobilizes institutional alignment to meet country needs, orchestrating integrated execution, enabling sustainable program design, sourcing innovation locally and harnessing best practices and best in class learning's from abroad, and ensuring that donors' investments through PATH demonstrate value for money.

PATH's South Africa Country Director is responsible for business development to enable a diversified and sustainable portfolio and for quality execution of solutions and projects across all of PATH's platforms. S/he will also nurture the right partnerships and evidence development to ensure local to global impact wherever possible. The Director will endeavour to earn the recognition as the leading NGO in global health innovation, especially in the development and commercialization of devices and diagnostics. Other strategic objectives for PATH in South Africa include improved health outcomes for women and children, strengthen implementation science around selected integrated HIV/TB prevention, treatment, care and support interventions, access, use and acceptance of sexual and reproductive health services as well as contribute to the prevention and management of non-communicable diseases. The Country Director is based in Johannesburg, South Africa and will report to PATH's Managing Director of International Programs.

Success as the Country Director in South Africa requires exceptional organizational and business acumen to forge an integrated identity for PATH in country, manage the office with cultural acuity and strategic management of PATH's and donors resources. S/he is a seasoned people leader who can scale through others, inspires high performing teams, and enable structures for cross-functional and cross-project collaboration. Project management and execution excellence are his/her hallmarks with the utmost commitment to compliance. While s/he is committed to meeting or exceeding project goals, s/he also continuously looks for and reinforces cross-project synergy, leveraging the existing anchor projects to earn credibility for PATH in the local public health community, and earn trusted advisor status with key stakeholders in the most strategic areas for PATH in South Africa. With a keen understanding of country needs, the Country Director will also be optimally positioned to forge creative solutions through public-private partnerships and participate in agenda setting discussions with donors and public health stakeholders.

Duties include (but not limited to)

The country director drives PATH's country strategy, regional approach and takes innovation to scale by:

• Engaging in collaborative, strategic, programmatic and budget planning with peers across the organization
• Aligning programmatic work to PATH's strategies and priorities through effective change management, communication and informing
• Creating a clear link for employees to see their work relating to PATH's over mission, strategies and priorities
• Effectively gathering intelligence and conducting regular landscape analyses of countries/regions
• Connecting global health trends with an understanding of the landscape/trends in South Africa to make programmatic decisions
• Representing and leveraging PATH's full technical offerings and capabilities in the public health community
• Leveraging technical expertise and leadership in policy advocacy

Understands and manages PATH business by:

• Creating and leveraging strong relationships and networks both in-country and regionally
• Convening and engaging PATH staff as well as partners, donors, and others to collaborate or coordinate efforts
• Managing grantee/partner performance and building our partners' capacity
• Seeks and wins funding opportunities aligned with PATH's strategy and priorities that help drive innovations to scale
• Establishes sustainable relationships with donors, partners and governments to increase impact long-term
• Defines new engagement/business models to diversify revenue streams and impact paradigms
• Secures, leverages, and shares internal resources to ensure projects are completed successfully and efficiently
• Ensures compliance, and competitive costs when sourcing, procuring and/or contracting outside of PATH
• Identifies and manages financial, legal, and technical risks for the organization and escalates risk issues appropriately
• Monitors both technical work and budgets to end projects on time, on budget and according to applicable policies/restrictions
• Manages media and public relations to highlight PATH's contributions and impact
• Works with PATH leadership to effectively manage crises and conflicts

Required Skills

• Demonstrated success in multi-cultural leadership and management.
• Demonstrated experience and skill managing a multi-project office for an international NGO or international organization.
• Demonstrated experience forging public/private partnerships to achieve technology transfer desired.
• Demonstrated product development and innovative design expertise.
• Demonstrated success in project conceptualization and design, proposal development, fundraising, program delivery and monitoring and evaluation.
• Ability to network and interact effectively with donor and collaborating agencies, including private companies, government, and public and non-profit organizations.
• Demonstrated acumen in financial accountability, administration, and operations.
• Fluent in English with excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
• Ability to mentor global health professionals at different career stages.
• Reputation as a flexible team player with ability to forge consensus in a matrix organization and align with headquarters from a field office.
• Demonstrated executive maturity, confidence, ability to enable cross-boundary collaboration and organizational agility; ability to attract talent and build organizations/teams and develop people. Develop business and organizational vision by implementing a strategic roadmap for the South Africa program.
• Demonstrated breakthrough thinking through deep insights on the country context and how to create value for our constituents in South Africa.
• Ability to establish a well-known track record of requiring employees, matrixes stakeholders and self to adhere to high standards of performance excellence.
• Ability to effectively scope problems, anticipate and pre-empt emerging issues and make decisions with conviction even in highly ambiguous contexts
• Proactively able to monitor the external and internal environment to explore options and define new opportunities; maintains a constructive attitude even in times of stress.

Required Experience

Advanced degree in public health, medicine or related field. Advanced technical competency in at least one of PATH's key programmatic areas (i.e. Maternal Child Health and Nutrition, HIV/TB, Non-communicable diseases, Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights and / or technology innovations). Advanced degree in business management or 10+ years' experience as leader of a mid-large organization. Track record of creating high performing and adaptable teams. Written and oral fluency in English.

The successful applicant must be able to travel internationally and domestically as needed (at 20% of time).
