About: Centre for Youth Empowerment and Civic Education (YECE) is a non-governmental organization established in 1997. It was formed with the aim of addressing the problems faced by youth, orphans and vulnerable children in Malawi. The main objective of YECE is to promote children’s rights, youth sexual reproductive health and rights (SRHR) and youth empowerment through capacity building, advocacy, community mobilization and communication for positive social and behavior change. YECE’s vision is a Malawian society where children and young people are protected, healthy and happy. YECE works with young people in traditional authorities of Lilongwe, Dedza, Mangochi, Kasungu and Mchinji districts.
Position Overview: The Research, Monitoring and Evaluation Fellow will help establish and strengthen YECE’s research unit as an established unit within the organization. S/he will play a key role in ensuring that YECE’s drive to conduct its own baseline studies, evaluations and other key research on youth sexual reproductive health and child rights issues is realized and that skilled personnel are identified and recruited for this task.  Furthermore, the fellow will be involved in managing implementation of the monitoring and evaluation framework for YECE. The fellow will be part of a diverse team, and will need to be able to work collaboratively with people from a range of backgrounds.
Responsibilities:
  • Work closely with Program Officers to plan and conduct baseline, midterm and end line studies
  • Develop concept notes for baseline, midterm and end line studies in collaboration with the Program Manager
  • Recruit and train enumerators for surveys
  • Develop data collection tools in collaboration with the Programs Manager
  • Creatively generate researchable areas of youth related issues for program development
  • Document and publish research findings in collaboration with the Communications and Advocacy Fellow
  • Work hand in hand with the Finance and Administration Officer to develop research budgets for approval of management
  • Develop and implement monitoring and evaluation plans for YECE programs
  • Any other duties as may be required from time to time
Required Skills and Experience:
  • Strong research skills and monitoring and evaluation experience
  • Self starter and able to work under minimal supervision
  • Able to work well with others and be excited to both learn and share ideas and knowledge
  • Willing to travel to project sites and ability to work even during odd hours
  • Experience in data collection, analysis and interpretation
  • Knowledge of global, regional and national policies on youth and children
Preferred Skills and Experience:
  • Educational focus in Project Management, Development Studies or related fields
  • Ability to demonstrate leadership in working with other team members
  • Experience in previous research areas
  • Strong background in data analysis skills
  • Experience working with young people, ideally on sexual and reproductive health rights and youth participation programs
  • Ability to understand researchable issues for the youth
  • Knowledge of child rights and policies at national, regional and global level
Living Conditions: Fellows will be provided with housing, health insurance and a living stipend of $650/month. Fellows will receive an award of $1500 upon successful completion of the fellowship year. Flights to and from the placement site and all other costs associated with GHC programming are included, including $600 in professional development funds.
