Overview:
The Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI) is a global health organization that works alongside 25 country governments to strengthen integrated health systems and expand access to care and treatment for HIV/AIDS, malaria, and other diseases. CHAI’s malaria team provides technical and management support to over 20 countries to support evidence-based decision-making to strengthen national malaria programs and advocate for additional funding when needed. CHAI’s overall goal in malaria is to reduce morbidity and mortality in the short-term, while advancing countries towards malaria elimination in the long term.
Overview of Role:
The Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI) is seeking a highly motivated individual with strong public health research experience, and analytical skills to undertake malaria surveillance and mapping activities and support malaria elimination efforts. The Research Associate will focus on supporting southern African countries, working with a number of individuals on the Global and Country Malaria Teams and therefore will need to possess strong communication and organizational skills. Further, it is expected that the Research Associate will need to partner with other academics and public health agencies to ensure CHAI’s research is complementary and not duplicative.

Responsibilities:
- Reviewing surveillance systems including available software used by countries, and identifying strengths and weaknesses;
- Supporting the assessment of the structure and performance of surveillance system in countries;
- Supporting the development of an integrated surveillance system based on the surveillance review and including automated risk mapping, and operational features;
- Carrying out analysis and mapping of malaria parasite movement based on human mobility and malaria epidemiology;
- Collating available data, and assessing quality and suitability for analysis;
- Analyzing geographic data with GIS software including mapping malaria incidence based on HMIS information, and supporting operational research projects;
- Working with partners from academic institutions to identify research with potential application to programs;
- Synthesizing results and communicating them internally and externally at international venues;
- Disseminating findings through high-quality presentations, reports, and publications; and,
- Any other tasks identified.

- 3+ years of working experience with increasing levels of responsibility and leadership;
- High levels of proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and internet applications;
- Demonstrated excellent analytical, quantitative, and problem solving skills;
- Strong statistical and geospatial analysis programming experience (R, SAS, STATA, ArcGIS and/or other relevant software);
- Knowledge of malaria and/or other major global infectious disease problems;
- Superb problem-solving skills and analytical capabilities;
- Ability to work independently in unstructured settings and to adapt to new environments and challenges;
- Enthusiasm for applying research methods to solve global health problems; and,
- Exceptional written and oral communication skills.
