ILRI Vacancy: Research Technician-CCAFS

ILRI seeks to recruit a Research Technician to support the CGIAR Research Program on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS) East Africa Program, and working closely with other CCAFS staff in different locations and partners at different levels.
ILRI works to enhance the roles livestock play in pathways out of poverty in developing countries. ILRI is a member of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) Consortium, a global research partnership of 15 centers working with many partners for a food-secure future. ILRI has two main campuses in East Africa and other hubs in West and southern Africa and South and Southeast Asia. www.ilri.org.
The Centre’s headquarters are located in Nairobi, Kenya, and research is conducted in 31 countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America. We are supported by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) and receive funding from over 50 different donors. CGIAR is a global agricultural research partnership for a food-secure future. Its science is carried out by 15 research centres that are members of the CGIAR Consortium in collaboration with hundreds of partner organizations. http://www.cgiar.org.
CCAFS addresses the increasing challenge of global warming on agriculture and food security through a strategic collaboration between the CGIAR and Future Earth. CCAFS seeks to promote a food-secure world through the provision of science-based efforts that support sustainable agriculture and enhance livelihoods while adapting to climate change and conserving natural resources and environmental services. East Africa is one of five CCAFS implementing regions. The CCAFS East Africa Program is based at ILRI in Nairobi and the regional activities are carried out in 4 countries (Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda).
 Key Responsibilities
  • Supporting national, regional and global policy engagement processes. This will include:
-Coordinating the process of identifying priority actions for Climate Smart Agriculture (CSA) in CCAFS EA focus countries (Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda), working with the Climate Change focal Ministries and Departments, and the Ministries of Agriculture in the different countries;
₋ Organizing, coordinating and documenting (with support from the communications team) CCAFS related policy engagement events in key national, regional and international forums related to climate change and agriculture. These include the African Ministerial Conference on the Environment (AMCEN), Conference on Climate Change and Development in Africa (CCDA), Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advise (SBSTA) and Conference of the Parties (COP) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC);
₋Developing concepts and organizing side events and national delegation briefing sessions alongside key events such as AMCEN, SBSTA and COP, identifying and reaching out to suitable speakers and presenters for the events, working with the communications team to ensure the events are well documented and publicised;
₋ Offer technical support to the development of the Regional Learning Partnership (RLP) knowledge sharing platform to ensure suitable and high quality content on climate change, agriculture and food security.
  • Coordinate capacity building and training initiatives for CCAFS EA program including:
₋   Supporting the development and design of training and learning events on climate change and agriculture in the region including writing the concepts, identifying and reaching out to suitable partners and participants and documenting the technical aspects of the events such as CCAFS analogous tools, farmer-to-farmer exchange visits and policy makers and practitioners learning events;
₋   Support identification of suitable CCAFS regional partners to participate in the different training and learning events being organized by the global CCAFS themes;
₋  Collaborate with the other CCAFS regions and themes and partners to organize scientific conferences, workshops and learning events.
  • Support program management including monitoring and documentation of technical activities:
₋  Support the annual work planning and annual technical reporting through the CCAFS online Planning and Reporting platform (P&R);
₋  Support technical documentation of CCAFS activities including writing, reviewing and sharing workshop reports;
₋  Keeping track of partnership engagements and major outcomes through technical interim and annual reports.
 Requirements
  •  A Masters’ degree in agricultural, social or environmental sciences, development practice and related fields;
  • An understanding of and experience with key issues related to governance, climate change, agriculture, livelihoods, and food security in East Africa;
  • At least three (3) years’ work experience in a partnership engagement; environment in an international or development organization;
  • Ability to connect with a wide range of key partners or actors at local, national and regional levels such as policy makers, private sector, researchers, and NGO;
  • Good communication and knowledge management skills;
  • Good interaction skills with a high – level of problem solving ability;
  • Work experience in East Africa and ability to work independently.
Terms of appointment:
This is a Nationally Recruited Staff (NRS) position based at ILRI’s Nairobi campus and is for a 2 year fixed term contract period.
Job level and salary:
This position is job level 2C with a starting salary of KES 116,417 per month. In addition ILRI currently offers medical insurance for staff and dependents, Life insurance, Pension at 12.5% employers contribution, Annual holiday entitlement of 30 days+ public holidays within ILRI’s National Recruited Staff Scheme.
