Organizational Setting and Reporting
The internship is located in the Investment Policy Section of the Regional Integration and Trade Division (RITD) at the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA).
The internship is for two (2) months with an opportunity for extension, pending on the needs of the section.
The internship is UNPAID and full-time.
Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.
The Investment Policy Section deals with policy issues relating to the promotion and facilitation of intra-African and international investment flows in the African continent, specifically to upscale this as a source of development finance.
The focus of this internship will be to assist the section in its work to undertake research and analytically work to support member States in the formulation and designing of investment policies relevant for sustainable growth. In particular, the internship may assist the section in the preparation of a report on investments agreements landscape in Africa.
Responsibilities
Under the general guidance of the Director of the Division, and the direct supervision of the Chief of the Investment Policy Section and within delegated authority, the incumbent will carry out the following functions:
Assist in compiling information on existing investment agreements in Africa. The aim is to analyse the various agreements in terms of their scope, definition, degree of protection, standard of treatment and resolution of disputes
Assist with research on investment policies and bilateral investment treaties in the continent. Additionally, the intern will also provide assistance in reviewing specific characteristics of these policies and agreements with a view to identify regional integration opportunities that may attract greater domestic and international investments.
Collaborate in the organization of an ad hoc expert group meeting on investment policies and the bilateral investment treaties landscape in Africa: implications for regional integration.
Assist with other tasks as needed and participate in some day-to-day operational tasks of the secretariat. This may include servicing requests for information; support for developing presentations; etc.

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:
Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); or (c) have graduated with a university degree (as defined above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one year period of graduation;
Be computer literate in standard software applications;
Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and
Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
Work Experience
Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in both oral and written English or French is required. Knowledge of the other is desirable.
