Recruitment for this position is done on local basis, whether or not the candidate is a resident of the duty station. External candidates will be considered only when no suitable internal candidates are identified from the duty station, and subject to a passing grade on the relevant entry-level examination. If selected, external candidates will be responsible for any expenses incurred in order to take the ASAT examination, and, in the event of an employment offer, any cost relating to travel and relocation to the duty station on appointment and separation. The candidate will also be responsible to get any visas and work permits in order to take up the appointment. If selected, external candidates will be recruited on local basis and they would not be entitled to international benefits. Candidates who are short-listed to be considered for this position will be contacted by the recruiter to be scheduled to sit for the ASAT at a later date at the duty station.
Organizational Setting and Reporting
This post is located in the Conference Services Section, of the Division of Administration (CSS/DoA). Under the general guidance of the Chief, Conference Services Section, and the direct supervision of the Chief, Conference Coordination Unit , the incumbent will be responsible for the following:
Responsibilities
  • Oversee the functions and responsibilities of the CCU Marketing Sub-Unit, and manage its operations through the planning and implementation of marketing and public related functions-monitoring the proper implementation of the marketing strategy and exhibitions related functions-ensuring the smooth running and implementation of the AACTB/EAL/Selected hotels and tours operators Joint Marketing Committee , development of related data base system and will perform the following functions,
  • Assist in the performance of Marketing and Public Relations functions in order to increase the occupancy rate and income of the UNCC-AA by implementing the marketing strategy and action plan of UNCC-AA as proposed under the 2008 Consultant Feasibility Study Report on maximizing the utilization of the UN Conference Centre of Addis Ababa, as well as the Recommendations of the Auditors Report stipulated in the Management Letter to ECA dated April 2008
  • Assist in the conception, design and production of UNCC-AA promotional profiles, magazines, hand-outs and brochures, and organize the display and distribution of promotional tools and material for marketing UNCC-AA to potential and existing clients in Ethiopia;
  • Assist in the increase of momentum of partnerships established by CSS with traditional conference-related operators in the local market such as the Addis Ababa Cultural and Tourism Bureau, Ethiopian Airlines, Sheraton Hotel and other major hotels in Addis Ababa, Travel and Tours Agencies, newspapers etc, in view of Marketing Addis Ababa as a Conference and Tourism destination
  • Under guidance of the Chief of the Conference Coordination Unit (CCU), set up measurable objectives to be attained through marketing, public relations and representation, in view of the new challenges and opportunities arising in the local and regional conference markets, and formulate the resource requirements for an effective implementation of the marketing action plan;
  • Organize visits of important guests within UNCC-AA and Africa Hall and sight-seeing tours of Addis Ababa for conference delegates as per request;
  • Establish relevant mechanism and strategy to promote mutually beneficial partnership between conference organizers in Ethiopia, conference halls, as well as major hotels, and promote sustained referrals for hosting meetings;
  • Contribute to the establishment of a new exhibition and trade fair strategy within the UNCC, in order to boost income generation activities and oversee the effective and timely organization of exhibitions and trade fairs in the UNCC;
  • Contribute to the establishment of the UNCC new Business Centre, and make adequate proposals for promotional activities and sales;
  • Assist in enhancing interaction amongst other UN agencies and organizations for increased knowledge and experience in marketing strategies, fund raising opportunities and challenges for the benefit of the UNCC-AA;
  • Assist in the establishment of a data base and archiving system for marketing;
  • Increase the partnership with UN Headquarters Department of Information ( DPI), Visitors Service, in order to enhance UNCC's promotional activities, and set up the first ' UN Shop 'in the UNCC;
  • Perform any other related duties as well as monitoring functions in CCU, as assigned by the Chief,CCU.

Education
  • High school diploma or equivalent. University degree in Communication, Journalism, Media or Marketing are desirable.
  • Relevant training and exposure in marketing related functions is required. Must have passed the United Nations Administrative Support Assessment Test (ASAT)
Work Experience
  • A minimum of ten years of experience in media, journalism, marketing, promotional activities or related area.
Languages
  • Fluency in one of the working languages of the UN Secretariat, English or French, (both oral and written) is required;
  • knowledge of the other is desirable.
  • Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage
Assessment Method
  • Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
