Country Director

D-tree International is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality of health care available to the world’s poor by using hand held technology to provide accurate and effective point-of-care diagnosis and treatment. Our vision is to equip frontline health workers with the tools they need to deliver first-class, evidence-based medical care to all patients. We are pursuing this vision by developing easy to use applications f or diagnosis and treatment on mobile phones for use by health workers. The symptom-based protocols guide the user through a series of questions leading to an accurate diagnosis and treatment for each patient.
We are seeking a Country Director to lead our office in Malawi, who will be supporting both our community and facility based implementations. The position will be based in Lilongwe with frequent travel to implementation field sites.
We seek a candidate who is motivated, interested in health care and technology, open to innovative ideas and technology, efficient, eager to work hard and a team player. The position will require working closely with health workers, district and clinic level supervisors, partner organizations, donors and the D-tree team to implement the programs. The Country Director is responsible for leading the Malawi administration, information management, grant management; the direction, supervision and evaluation of employees, and the design, implementation, monitoring, evaluation and reporting of program activities. Person must be comfortable in multiple roles including: documenting processes, refining the tools, training health workers and managers, communications with internal and external stakeholders, performing data analysis, preparing phones for trainings and meeting with senior personnel from the government and NGO partners. This position is a key member of the D-tree international management team.
Job Responsibilities
We are looking for a candidate who is willing to take on any task required to make our programs successful. This will include but not be limited to the following:
  • Represent D-tree to senior government officials/personnel and with NGO partners
  • Manage all country office staff (8-10 employees) including oversight of country office finance, administration and human resources.
  • Provide coaching and results-oriented leadership of the country staff. Stimulates individual staff performance and leads overall team development.
  • Monitor Malawi project portfolio from various funders. Ensures timelines are followed and deliverables met
  • Working with global staff to design new projects and write proposals
  • Develop and adjust project strategies and work plans to ensure project success
  • Own project objectives and ensure staff and partners are kept on track and within budget to achieve results
  • Develop application specifications including flowcharts and detailed protocols
  • Write reports for donors/partners on progress of projects
  • Present project highlights at meetings and forums/conferences
  • Develop and foster effective working relationship with Government from national to grassroots level
  • Establish strategic alliances to explore areas for collaboration and expanding and strengthening program impact.
Required Skills and Experience
  • Work experience: Minimum 8 years’ experience in public health and/or IT; knowledge and experience working with community health programs and overall health systems required
  • Education: Minimum Master’s degree – preferably MD, MPH or PhD
  • Demonstrated proposal and report writing ability and managing international donor-funded projects
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Excellent management skills and experience managing multi-cultural teams
  • Strong analytical and problem solving-skills; excellent verbal and written communication skills, including public speaking experience
  • Excellent written and spoken English, Chichewa an asset
  • Telephone/Computer: Familiar and comfortable with use of mobile telephones and excellent computer skills
  • Must be able to work independently, multi-task, be persistent and work under tight deadlines with minimal supervision
  • Ability to travel up to 50% of the time within Malawi
