Job Description

Founded in 1961, Project Concern International (PCI) is a non-profit health and humanitarian aid organization dedicated to preventing disease, improving community health, and promoting sustainable development (in Malawi since 2007).  PCI, with funding from USAID, is implementing a new five year holistic food security program “NjiraProject – Pathways to Sustainable Food Security” (Njira) in the Balaka and Machinga Districts of Malawi, with a central PCI office located in Blantyre. Njira program seeks to reduce food insecurity through increased access and availability of diverse and nutritious foods to vulnerable households, improved health and nutrition of pregnant and lactating women and children under five, and improved resilience of vulnerable households to shocks and stresses. Job Summary
The Gender Advisor will lead the provision of technical assistance for Njira Project: Pathways to Sustainable Food Security, a Title II USAID Development Food Assistance Program (DFAP) in Malawi.  In close partnership with the other technical leads, and reporting directly to the Deputy Chief of Party (DCOP), the Gender Advisor will be responsible for ensuring gender integration excellence both in programming and operational implementation.  The Gender Advisor will provide overall gender technical leadership and oversight for gender integration in reducing chronic malnutrition and food insecurity among vulnerable populations in Malawi through technical leadership, coordination and collaboration with implementing partners, and capacity building. 

Key Duties & Responsibilities
  • Provide overall gender technical leadership and oversight to ensure PCI’s programs are implemented with the highest standard in gender equity and in compliance with USAID donor requirements
  • Liaise with PCI’s Technical Advisor for Gender, based in Washington, DC, to ensure Njira program activities are aligned with PCI's pursuit of excellence in gender-equity and working towards standardization with PCI’s Gold Standards for Gender Equity.
  • Represent PCI in all relevant forums and networks in Machinga, Balaka, Blantyre and Lilongwe
  • Play a leadership role in the coordination and implementation of the Gender Analysis and subsequent adoption of findings into program activities.
  • Work closely with all technical advisors, including Agriculture/Livelihood, MCHN, DRR, Local Capacity Strengthening, and VSL/Agribusiness Advisors.
  • Work closely with Monitoring and Evaluation to ensure high standards of data collection, reporting, and adapting of program activities as needed
  • Provide training and technical capacity building for project staff, as identified and needed
  • Serve as a Malawi Gender Focal Point for the global PCI Gender Equity Commission, including leadership for implementing organization-wide gender mainstreaming initiatives.  Regularly share Njira/Malawi successes, challenges and promising practices
  • Represent PCI in gender-related meetings with partners and stakeholders, including national technical working group meetings.  Participate in relevant coordination and/or working groups in Balaka, Machinga, Lilongwe and Blantyre and provide additional technical assistance and/or training to relevant partners (government, NGOs, etc).
  • Work with the PCI team to draft quarterly, semiannual, and annual activity reports and document success stories to showcase PCI Malawi work.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Develop and carry out a plan to increase the capacity of local partners in gender equity for the implementation of program activities
  • Serve in key role of the program management structure and participate in strategic planning and direction setting for the program.


Required Skills
  • Preferred post-graduate degree in a related field (e.g. MPH, MSc, MA) with a specialization or coursework related to gender.
  • Minimum of 5-7 years in progressively responsible positions, preferably with significant international field experience, either in similar or comparable roles
  • Significant experience implementing food and nutrition security projects, preferably in Malawi or Southern Africa
  • Experience managing a DFAP or Multi-Year Assistance Program (MYAP) in a similar context
  • Understanding of governmental structures and processes in Malawi; understanding of current gender policies and programs in Malawi desirable.  Familiarity and sensitivity to gender issues, specifically as they relate to food and nutrition security in Malawi
  • Demonstrated ability to create and maintain effective working relationships with local ministries, NGO partners, international agencies, and U.S. government agencies
  • Development philosophy in keeping with PCI’s mission, vision, core values and approach to integrated, community-driven programming
  • Excellent analytical and self-motivation skills; excellent advocacy and persuasion skills; able to think critically
  • Excellent capacity building, team building/management, and coordination skills
  • Excellent facilitation, analytical and organizational skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English and Chichewa
  • Excellent report writing and computer skills
  • Travel to field sites will be required
  • Demonstrated skills in capacity building, mentoring, leadership, and organizational development.
