Communications Specialist - Perform Project, Malawi

The Communications Specialist will lead implementation of the PERFORM Communications Strategy, which will define PERFORM's target audiences (who), the goals/types of content that will be communicated with each audience (what), the method/s of communication (how), and the timing/frequency of communication (when). S/He will report to directly to the COP.
Roles & Responsibilities
  • Implement the PERFORM Project's Communications Strategy
  • Develop and maintain a web-based communications/IKMS platform
  • Assess communication needs, and develop targeted communications messages/tools to best support technical implementation
  • Support PERFORM's diverse partners with their communication efforts.
  • Use existing project baseline and market research to develop, manage, and implement all phases of an effective behavior change communication strategy, including: using/conducting formative research in strategy design; designing, producing and pretesting media, messages and materials; implementing community mobilization strategies; and monitoring and evaluation of communications impact.
  • Develop communication inputs/indicators for proposed project baseline research/KAP survey
  • Use participatory approaches to develop, produce, pretest, disseminate, track, and evaluate communication, outreach, and awareness materials and tools, including print, radio, and video products.
  • Produce and deliver marketing communication materials, such as success stories, lessons learned, feature articles, press releases, project reports and results, etc.
  • Plan, coordinate, publicize, and implement public outreach events in target communities.
  • Establish and maintain relationships and communication with local media. Create and maintain database of journalist contact information.
  • Coordinate and collect communications material from project sites, including photographs and case studies of beneficiaries, staff, partners and community members.
  • Monitor and track project communication activities, including tracking dissemination of communication and outreach products, attendance at outreach events, etc.
  • Collaborate closely with project Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) and Gender Specialists to evaluate impact of project communication and outreach activities.
Key Qualifications
  • BA in communication or journalism; Masters in international communication, international development, behavior change communication, or public health preferred.
  • 7 years field experience designing, implementing, and managing communication and/or behavior change communication projects and programs in Africa and/or other regions, with demonstrated impact.
  • Knowledge of state of the art communication strategies and their practical application to this sector.
  • Understanding of widely accepted formative research, pretesting, and monitoring and evaluation methodologies for effective communication interventions.
  • Demonstrated experience developing innovative and practical solutions to communication challenges in developing countries.
  • Experience implementing USAID-funded programs and familiarity with USAID regulations strongly preferred.
  • Excellent oral/written communication skills in English.
  • Motivated self-starter with proven ability to work effectively as a team player.
  • Ability to set priorities while multi-tasking, and meet deadlines.
  • At least 5 years of professional experience in communications
  • Experience developing and maintaining diverse communications platforms (including internet-based platforms)
  • Knowledge management experience
  • Fluency in English and Chichewa required, both written and verbal.
