Job Description
Founded in 1961, Project Concern International (PCI) is a non-profit health and humanitarian aid organization dedicated to preventing disease, improving community health, and promoting sustainable development (in Malawi since 2007).  PCI, with funding from USAID, is implementing a new five year holistic food security program “NjiraProject – Pathways to Sustainable Food Security” (Njira) in the Balaka and Machinga Districts of Malawi.

Njira seeks to reduce food insecurity through increased access and availability of diverse and nutritious foods to vulnerable households, improved health and nutrition of pregnant and lactating women and children under five, and improved resilience of vulnerable households to shocks and stresses. PCI Malawi invites motivated and experienced professionals to apply for the following position.

NB. The two positions, Nutrition Advisor and WASH Coordinator are Zomba based with frequent travel to implementation areas in Balaka and Machinga. One Position, ICT Coordinator is Blantyre based with frequent travel to implementation areas in Balaka and Machinga.

  1. 1.     NUTRITION  ADVISOR

Reporting to the Deputy Chief of Party, the Nutrition Advisor is responsible for planning and supervising the implementation of nutrition activities in the Njira project. S/he ensures that activities are consistent with Njira’s project design and the Government of Malawi’s (GoM) policies and guidelines, representing PCI/Njira at national and district level stakeholder nutrition meetings. S/he makes frequent visits to the impact areas, and is responsible for technical and management tasks associated with implementation of nutrition components of the project.  The Nutrition Advisor provides technical leadership, guidance, and oversight to the Njira project team for the timely and quality implementation of all nutrition activities according to the project’s detailed implementation plan.  These tasks include but are not limited to: facilitating the GoM’s “1,000 Special Days” initiative to prevent child stunting; ensuring the technical quality of essential nutrition actions (ENA) presented through the Care Group methodology; strengthening and scaling up community management of acute malnutrition (CMAM) services; improving hygiene and sanitation behaviors in collaboration with WASH staff; partnering with the Agriculture Advisor to sensitize communities on dietary diversity including the establishment of permaculture-based kitchen gardens; teaming with the RMNCH Advisor to ensure PLW access nutritional services; collaborating with the commodity team on the distribution of commodities to PLW and children under two; and ensuring all nutrition activities are implemented with gender sensitivity, helping design and implement a nutrition barrier analysis; monitoring all nutrition interventions and program activities at the community level; liaising with district level Ministry of Health and Ministry of Agriculture nutrition officers;  facilitating nutrition training and capacity building; bolstering quality improvement efforts (e.g. quality circles); planning/coordinating with the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Agriculture, and local partners; and fulfilling reporting and documentation obligations.

CANDIDATE Requirements

  • Minimum of Bachelor’s degree, preferably with a Masters, in a field related to Nutrition/WASH.
  • Minimum of 5 years extensive experience in design, management, support, and monitoring and evaluation of community based Food and Nutrition Security programming and WASH in Malawi
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills in English and Chichewa
  • Willingness to travel extensively
