The Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA), an organization entrusted with the assessment, collection, and accounting for tax revenues for the Malawi Government is inviting applications from suitably qualified and interested persons to fill a vacant position of Legal Counsel in the Legal Division.
FUNCTIONS /KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Position : Legal Counsel
Location : Head Office (Blantyre)
Grade : D2
Reporting to : Director of Legal Services
•Reviewing cases referred to the Legal Department by other Departments and preparing opinions in accordance with the provisions of appropriate laws, best practices and procedures
•Preparing detailed briefs for cases referred to the Courts and the Special Arbitrator and the Special Referee
•Drafting contracts and any other agreements as may be assigned
•Assisting in the interpretation of legislation, regulations, rulings, directives etc. for the purpose of Taxpayer Education
•Representing the Authority in the Supreme Court, High Court and Court subordinates thereof:
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Applicants should have the following qualifications:
•Bachelor of Laws (Honours) Degree from a recognized university
•Admitted to practice Law in the Supreme Court of Malawi; High Court and Courts subordinate thereto and must be holders of a valid practice license
•Proven ability to prepare legal documents, and briefs
•A minimum of three years working experience in a busy environment
•Excellent command of written and spoken English.
Knowledge, skills, abilities and attributes:
•Very good knowledge and experience of Commercial Law, Labour Law, Contract Law, and Procurement Law.
•Very good knowledge of tax laws and tax systems in Malawi
•Good knowledge and experience of HR rules, policies and practices in accordance with the Malawi labour laws
•High degree of professional ethics and integrity
