Based in: USAID/APRENDER A LER Headquarters Office, Maputo, MozambiqueReports to: Chief of PartyProgram and Organizational Background: A four-year project funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), USAID/APRENDER A LER (ApaL) will support the National Ministry of Education (MINED) to improve the reading skills of Mozambican students in grades 2 and 3 in the provinces of Nampula and Zambezia through teacher training, instructional materials development, and improved school management. The principal approach is to improve the quality and increase the quantity of reading instruction. Managed by World Education, Inc. (WEI) and supported by local subcontractor, Universidade A Politécnica, ApaL will invest in and work with host-country government systems and stakeholders to ensure sustainability within the education sector remains in-country.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Work with the in-country team to evaluate and review the existing reading strategy and approaches. Provide feedback for revisions to the reading strategy based both on international best practices and on baseline EGRA assessment results.
- Support creation of updated in-service teacher training program and materials (including training of trainers materials and on-going cluster-level teacher training materials). - Support creation of scripted lesson plans linked to the Mozambican national curriculum for grades 2-3 and designed to support teachers in teaching key foundational literacy skills which most students lack.- Support creation of a series of rapid classroom reading assessments which teachers can quickly complete in their classrooms to determine if students have mastered a series of key reading competencies.
QUALIFICATIONS
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
WEI is seeking a technical specialist in early grade reading/literacy with significant experience designing and implementing early grade reading and literacy programs.- Advanced degree (s) in Education; preference will be given to candidates with education or training in Early Grade Literacy/Development.
- Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience working in early grade reading programs in developing countries, preferably in sub-Saharan Africa.
- An intimate knowledge of international research and best practices in early grade reading is required.
- Excellent interpersonal and team work skills.
- Superior written and oral communication skills in English and Portuguese are essential.
Salary commensurate with experience.
