Post of principal at chancellor college

The post of Principal at Chancellor College will soon fall vacant. In view of this development, suitably qualified candidates are invited to apply for this demanding position. Interested candidates should be senior academics with proven managerial, teaching and research experience. They should also hold either a PhD in their field of specialization or its equivalent on top of having served in a senior management position in an institution of higher education over a period of not less than 5 years. Equally desirable is their demonstrable capacity to initiate innovations geared at making Chancellor College a vibrant and competitive institution operating in tune with 21st Century global trends in higher education.

Further, candidates should be able to display possession of the following characteristics that are essential in the role of a Principal in a dynamic environment of higher education: the ability to give higher education an entrepreneurial thrust against a background of dwindling funding; awareness of current challenges facing higher education in Malawi; knowledge of the dynamics involved in capacity building at various levels; familiarity with issues of curriculum development and review; capacity to deal with intense pressure in times of crisis; team-building skills required in participatory management; negotiating skills; insight into global trends in higher education; understanding of gender, human rights and HIV/AIDS issues; a flair for strategic planning and implementation, appreciation of conflict resolution skills, a mastery of content obtaining in key national development policies, ability to initiate, manage and sustain international partnerships; ability in budget management and tracking.

As the academic and administrative Chief Executive of his/her College, the Principal of Chancellor College is responsible to the Vice-Chancellor and is expected to carry out the following duties on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor:
a.    providing leadership to his/her college geared at achieving academic objectives of his/her college as stipulated in the University of Malawi Strategic Plan;

b.   taking a lead in the identification, mobilization and distribution of financial, teaching, learning and research resources meant to facilitate the operations of Chancellor College;

c.    ensuring that senior managers in his/her college are carrying out their business effectively and efficiently and are held responsible and accountable for their activities;

d.   spearheading strategic planning, policy fine-tuning and implementation targeted at making his/her college responsive to the overarching needs of Malawi in particular and the world in general;

e.    reminding faculties, research centres and departments of the need to develop new curricula and regularly review old ones to ensure that the degree programmes offered by the college are in tune with the needs of the labour market;

f.     making sure that mechanisms for quality control and inspection put in place by the University are functioning properly at College level;

g.    enforcing high standards of discipline among staff members and students in order to create and maintain necessary order and an acceptable atmosphere conducive to teaching and learning;

h.   ensuring that funds raised by the college and those provided by government, are managed in a prudent and transparent manner;

i.     maintaining close liaison with the offices of the Vice-Chancellor, the University Registrar, the University Finance Officer and the University Internal Auditor on all matters affecting Chancellor College’s core functions;

j.     marketing the college by giving it desirable visibility through interaction with the industry, the public sector, the donor community and the external world on higher education issues;

k.   overseeing that teaching, learning, research, consultancy and admission standards are maintained at the highest level possible;

l.     chairing assessment, College Appointments and Disciplinary Committee and other adhoc committees he/she may create;

m.  attending University Wide meetings and carrying out other assignments delegated to him/her by the Vice-Chancellor in adherence to statutes of the revised 1998 University of Malawi Act.

A competitive salary plus a package of fringe benefits commensurate with the position of Principal will be provided to the successful applicant in keeping with the University of Malawi structure of emoluments which has substantially improved in recent years.
