Four-Year PhD Studentship – Investigating the Action and Mechanisms of Toxicity of Novel Anti-Malaria Compounds

MRC Laboratories, The Gambia -Toxicology Unit

We offer a four-year, full-time joint PhD studentship between the Medical Research Council Toxicology Unit, located at Leicester University and the MRC Unit in The Gambia to investigate the action of novel anti-malarial compounds and to investigate the toxicity of established anti-malarials. Full financial support will be provided.
The student will be registered at the University of Leicester in the United Kingdom and spend approximately 50% of their time in Leicester gaining experience in biochemical, pharmacological and molecular approaches to parasitology. The remainder of the time the student will be located in The Gambia where they will conduct field work and investigate the toxicity associated with the anti-malarial primaquine.
This PhD-Studentship will benefit from the excellent scientific infrastructure at the MRC Toxicology Unit that offers first class, imaging, genomic, proteomic and cell biology facilities as well as an internal PhD training programme that equips the student with scientific and transferable skills. This will be offered together with the PhD programme in The Gambia Unit that provides unparalleled opportunities for research training in The Gambia and West African sub-region. The MRC Unit The Gambia provides world class, multidisciplinary research programmes supported by clinical, technology, infrastructure and training platforms that meet internationally recognized standards. Students will have a unique opportunity to experience global health challenges as they affect communities and individuals, while working with experienced clinicians and leading scientists in infectious disease research.
Candidates should have at least a BSc (2.1) in a biological discipline – or equivalent qualification. Due to funding restrictions, the studentship is open to African and United Kingdom citizens only.
