UNU Institute on Globalization, Culture and Mobility (UNU-GCM)

The United Nations University Institute on Globalization, Culture and Mobility (UNU-GCM) aims to become a pre-eminent research center focusing on globalization, culture and mobility through the lens of migration and media. It will engage in rigorous research in these areas, sharing knowledge and good practice with a broad range of groups, collectives and actors within and beyond the academy. Its commitments will be at local and global levels, whereby it will seek to bridge gaps in discourses and practices, so as to work towards the goals of the United Nations with regard to development, global partnership, sustainability and justice.
UNU-GCM seeks a part-time Communications Consultant. The ideal candidate is highly efficient and works well in a fast-paced and professional team environment, dealing effectively with the organization’s communication. The right individual for this role will be a motivated and energetic Communications consultant, who takes initiative, enjoys finding solutions to a varying number of challenges, is detail-oriented, and takes pride in his/her work. S/He must be fluent in English, with a good command of Spanish and Catalan. The ability to build strong links with mainstream media and press in Catalonia, elsewhere in Spain and more internationally, is an important element of this position, as is the ability to project the work of UNU-GCM internationally. Familiarity with social media is also required.

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Director of UNU-GCM and under the supervision of the Manager, the incumbent will be responsible for the following duties:
  • Work closely with the administrative team and members of the research team to develop clear project deliverables and timelines, and to ensure timely completion of deliverables;
  • Write content as agreed with the Director for UNU-GCM’s website needs;
  • Liaise closely with the website developer in order to ensure that UNU-GCM’s website is updated regularly;
  • Maintain, update and manage mailing lists and contact lists;
  • Take responsibility for producing UNU-GCM’s monthly newsletter, “Mosaics”;
  • Design and format all public documents, invitations, and other material that is circulated publicly;
  • Project UNU-GCM into mainstream media, such as newspapers, TV, radio and digital media, to ensure that UNU-GCM’s profile is foregrounded;
  • Be present at all events organized by UNU-GCM and ensure that appropriate media coverage takes place, as agreed with the Director;
  • Other tasks as needed for successful project completion.

Required qualifications and experience

  • Degree in Public Relations or a related field, or a significant combination of training and experience;
  • Minimum 4 years of work experience of media/communications with a track record of successful Communications work;
  • Skilled communicator and familiarity with the protocol of international organizations;
  • The ability to write fluent and accurate texts in English for the website and for the Mosaics newsletter;
  • Advanced knowledge of English spelling, punctuation and grammar, as well as of Spanish and Catalan. Knowledge of another UN official language would be an advantage;
  • Ability to show initiative and to project UNU-GCM’s work locally, nationally and internationally, using a variety of media;
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment and meet tight deadlines;
  • Strong organization skills and attention to detail;
  • Ability to work under minimal supervision and with a high level of resilience;
  • Strong interpersonal skills demonstrated by the ability to work in a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity.

Remuneration

The total remuneration will be 5,000 EUR. The successful candidate will be responsible for paying all taxes and other fiscal obligations.

Duration of contract

This is a part-time position of 4 hours a week for 44 weeks a year, spread over one calendar year under a Consultant Contract (CTC) with UNU. No consultant shall provide services for more than twenty four (24) months of accrued service within a period of thirty six (36) calendar months.
The successful candidate will be employed under a local contract and will not hold international civil servant status nor be a “staff member” as defined in the United Nations Staff Rules and Regulations. UNU does not sponsor a working visa for this position.
