UNU Institute on Globalization, Culture and Mobility (UNU-GCM)
The United Nations University Institute on Globalization, Culture and Mobility (UNU-GCM) aims to become a pre-eminent research center focusing on globalization, culture and mobility through the lens of migration and media. It will engage in rigorous research in these areas, sharing knowledge and good practice with a broad range of groups, collectives and actors within and beyond the academy. Its commitments will be at local and global levels, whereby it will seek to bridge gaps in discourses and practices, so as to work towards the goals of the United Nations with regard to development, global partnership, sustainability and justice.
UNU-GCM seeks a part-time Website Consultant to maintain and update its websites. The ideal candidate is highly efficient and works well in a fast-paced and professional team environment, dealing effectively with the organization’s technical demands. The right individual for this role will be a motivated and energetic consultant, who takes initiative, enjoys finding solutions to a varying number of challenges, is detail-oriented, and takes pride in his/her work. S/He must be fluent in English, with a good command of Spanish and Catalan. Web programming, graphic design, skilled communication and database administration are all elements of this position.
Responsibilities
Reporting to the Director of UNU-GCM and under the supervision of the Manager, the incumbent will be responsible for the following duties:
- Maintain and develop UNU-GCM websites and applications — primarily CMS driven — and enhance existing websites to meet UNU-GCM’s requirements;
- Work closely with the administrative team and members of the Research Team to develop clear project deliverables and timelines, and to ensure timely completion of deliverables;
- Draft, edit, format and upload content to Joomla and WordPress sites as required;
- Develop, implement, and support new features for new and existing solutions using PHP, MySQL, JavaScript, HTML, and CSS;
- Convert raw images and layouts from a graphic designer into CSS/XHTML themes;
- Determine appropriate architecture, and other technical solutions, and make relevant recommendations for each project;
- Alert the team to emerging technologies or applications and the opportunities to integrate them into operations and activities;
- Recommend code and design optimizations to improve the scalability of the applications and maximize performance; perform routine site maintenance as needed;
- Perform other tasks as needed for successful project completion.
Required qualifications and experience
- Degree in Internet/Web Technology, or a related field, or a significant combination of training and experience;
- Experience of media/communications/web design with a track record of successful technical web work;
- Significant experience with WordPress and Joomla CMS development;
- The ability to write correct texts for the website;
- 2-years’ minimum experience with HTML(5)/XHTML and CSS;
- 2-years’ minimum experience in web programming, including PHP, ASP, or JSP;
- Working knowledge of MYSQL;
- Working knowledge of current Adobe Master Suite programs;
- Working knowledge of SEO best practices in web development;
- Knowledge of cross-browser and cross-platform development issues, including W3C protocols and compliance;
- Advanced knowledge of English, spelling, punctuation and grammar, as well as of Spanish and Catalan. Knowledge of another UN official language would be an advantage;
- Ability to show initiative and work under minimal supervision and with a high level of resilience;
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment and meet tight deadlines;
- Ability to analyse web-based problems, develop and implement solutions;
- Strong organization skills and attention to detail;
- Strong interpersonal skills demonstrated by the ability to work in a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity.
Remuneration
The total remuneration will be 5,000 EUR. The successful candidate will be responsible for paying all taxes and other fiscal obligations.
Duration of contract
This is a part-time position of 4 hours a week for 44 weeks a year, spread over one calendar year under a Consultant Contract (CTC) with UNU. No consultant shall provide services for more than twenty four (24) months of accrued service within a period of thirty six (36) calendar months.
The successful candidate will be employed under a local contract and will not hold international civil servant status nor be a “staff member” as defined in the United Nations Staff Rules and Regulations. UNU does not sponsor a working visa for this position.
