Community Manager, Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI)

IREX seeks a Community Manager to manage the website/portal for the USAID-funded Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders program.  The purpose of this program to build the skills of young African leaders to improve the accountability and transparency of government, start and grow businesses, and serve their communities. This program will provide young Africa leaders across the continent with opportunities for professional development, networking, mentoring, and a range of support activities.
The position is contingent on funding. 

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Oversee all aspects of managing and continually updating the Washington Fellows website/social-collaboration platform, including information on upcoming events, a resource portal, chat features, links to social media, networking groups, voting features, and media engagement tools and media spots
  • Ensure that the website/social collaboration platform provides Fellows opportunities to contribute content and to engage in online discussions, taking into account the bandwidth available in African countries and the potentially limited internet access of the Fellows
  • Manage communications aspects of webinars and conduct social media outreach
  • Incorporate innovative features into the website/social collaboration platform designed to attract young African leaders, building on the existing ways they use the internet
  • Coordinate with a wide variety of stakeholders to gather, consolidate, and share content
  • Coordinate on a regular basis with technical platform administrators
  • Oversee communications and reporting on the website/social collaboration platform
  • International travel may be required up to 30%

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in communications, marketing or similar field; Master's degree preferred
  • Five to seven years of experience in communications in progressively more senior positions and minimum of two years of work related to knowledge management; Experience with USAID funded programs focused on youth development, education, and training programs in sub-Saharan Africa strongly preferred
  • Communications strategy development and execution, especially at small to mid-sized entrepreneurial organization(s)
  • Project management experience related to communications
  • Extensive successful writing and editing experience (externally focused) with a variety of online communications media platforms
  • Experience managing a portal and website designed to foster exchange
  • Exceptional written, oral, interpersonal, and presentation skills and the ability to effectively interface with senior management; highly responsive to emails and requests
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, results-oriented approach
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Knowledge of and active engagement in social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and YouTube required
  • Ability to work independently and also as part of a team
  • Self-reliant, good problem-solver, results-oriented
  • Basic knowledge of HTML and Drupal CMS is an asset
  • Fluency in English required, with excellent verbal and written communication skills; Proficiency in other relevant languages a plus
