Feed the Future Malawi – Integrating Nutrition in Value Chains Project

DAI, a global development consulting firm based in the United States, seeks a Nutrition Specialist to work on the Feed the Future - Malawi – Integrating Nutrition in Value Chains Project (INVC).
INVC is a 3 years United States Agency for International Development (USAID) project with two over-arching goals:
  • Sustainably reducing rural poverty and
  • Improving nutrition
To achieve these two goals, INVC will promote, support and facilitate gender equitable market-driven, agriculture-led and integrated economic growth approaches. INVC is expected to lead to agricultural transformation across three targeted value chains (Soya beans, ground nuts and Dairy) through:
  • Investing in the competitiveness of legumes (Soya bean and ground nut) and dairy value chains to develop domestic markets and improve nutrition options
  • Link increased market oriented production of legumes and dairy to household consumption and improved nutrition status
  • Support community based programs focused on behavior change, fortification, and capacity building to impact nutrition outcomes and;
  • Strengthen Agriculture-related organizations to improve institutional capacity to capture and scale up existing models and practices in order to implement one or more components of INVC.
These results will be achieved through five inter-related components of advancing Value chains competiveness, improving productivity, improving community capacity to prevent under-nutrition, promoting innovation and developing local capacity.
Position Description
The Nutrition Specialist is responsible for the overall planning, technical support, implementation and supervision of the nutrition component of the Malawi INVC program based on Care Group model in new districts as required.
Core Responsibilities and Duties
Under the technical guidance of DCoP (who also oversees the nutrition component), daily responsibility for INVC nutrition activities across the INVC districts in close collaboration with nutrition field coordinators.
  • Provide technical support and coordination with NASFAM, through which the nutrition program is to be integrated.
  • Ensure smooth implementation of project activities in accordance with the program work plan and in collaboration with NASFAM and its field structures.
  • Provide technical support for conducting baseline and end of project surveys on nutrition and formative research and barrier analysis studies to understand nutrition and health practices.
  • Provide technical support to the BCC specialist, Capacity Building manager and three value chain coordinators.
  • Ensure that nutrition lesson learned and success stories by the project are properly documented and disseminated within INVC, national and regionally.
  • Represent the project at nutrition technical meetings with development partners, government and civil societies.
  • Monitor and coordinate the work of partners to ensure that the project objectives and USAID are met.
Under the technical guidance of the DCoP, provide strategic and technical oversight of the following:
  • Coordination of partners and stakeholders meetings/workshops
  • Provide ToT for partners and government staff on care group model food processing and hygiene and sanitation
  • Review/develop legume based(Soya bean and ground nuts) recipes for dietary diversification
  • Review/ develop integrated curriculum for Nutrition activities of the project
  • Develop nutrition BCC on soya, bean and dairy product
  • Support MoH with logistics, and mobilization during Child Health days and relevant activities that affects the health of the child and mother.
  • Working under the DCoP draw monthly, quarterly and yearly detailed program activity implementation plan including expenditure projection and other appropriate requirements
  • Compile monthly reports for INVC nutrition program activities
Qualifications
  • MA or comparable experience in nutrition, health or related fields.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience implementing donor-funded nutrition programs in development projects, experience with USAID is strongly preferred.
  • Experience working with host-country government officials.
  • Experience working with Care Groups preferred
