CONSULTANCY POSITION
Landscape Designer

1.BACKGROUND
Purpose of the proposed consultancy is four-fold: i) Design of a multi-year campus landscaping plan; ii) development of an phased-planting integrated landscaping time/works plan; iii) embedding designed opportunities of landscaping features being used as a tool for learning; iv) monitor the maintenance of the integrated landscaping for a period of 2 months and build capacity at college level to continue the monitoring in order to form a sustainable TTC campus eco-system;
UNICEF is therefore seeking to hire a consultant to provide technical support in designing, developing, implementing and maintaining an integrated TTC campus landscaping plan.
2.SCOPE OF WORK
The Consultant will specifically carry out the following tasks:
Linking to specific objective 1:
a. Conduct a rapid desk review on integrated campus landscape planning in sub-Saharan Africa (best practices, exemplary examples);
b. Develop a physical program brief and multi-year campus landscaping development plan;
c. Design an integrated landscaping plan - all phases: conceptual, sketch plan, provisional plans, final landscaping plans, technical working drawings and details;

d. Develop a phased-planting, multi-year landscaping implementation (time/works) plan;
e. Prepare a cost estimation and bill of quantities for the implementation plan;
f. Provide technical support: preparing bid documents, tendering, evaluation and contract awarding of the phased, multi-year landscaping implementation plan;
g. Develop and roll out a tool to track progress of landscaping works/maintenance activities;
Linking to specific objective 3;
h. Embed opportunities (designed) and ensure the implementation of landscaping features that can be utilized as tools for learning about the natural environment (trees, shrubs, plants), school farming (edible school yard, eco-orchard and orchard), and including non-animate aspects like water-, soil-, mineral-, air-, and weather patterns and systems,
i. Establish quality assurance mechanism and a monitoring framework.

j. Monitor Government or third party landscaping works and maintenance up to 2 months after finishing of the landscaping works; build capacity at college level for landscape maintenance (one-day on-site workshop); prepare a detailed landscaping maintenance plan at college level for the integrated campus landscaping.
k. Provide progress reports design phase (1stmonth: weekly); procuring & implementation phase (2nd-4thmonth:two-weekly); maintenance phase (5th-6thmonth: monthly)
The consultant shall carry out the activities in accordance with the scope of work but shall also be required to do the following:
Conduct quality assurance field monitoring during the works implementation (two-weekly reports) and maintenance (monthly reports) phases to cross-check delivery of the project deliverables to agreed time frames, standards of quality, and other parameters that have a bearing on integrated campus landscape planning
3.EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE
· Advanced University Degree in Landscape Architecture, Environmental Design and/or Landscape Engineering;
· 5 years of experience as a consultant in the landscape architecture sector in Sub-Saharan Africa;
· Full membership of a relevant professional body (e.g. RIBA, AIA, BNA, and so forth)
· Demonstrated experience, understanding and familiarity with eco-system design (living systems), permaculture design and horticulture design with regard to local climatic, soils and cultural context; norms & standards of landscape engineering and project implementation and how these are interrelated in sub-Saharan Africa.
· Excellent communication and report writing skills.
· Experience of delivering landscaping infrastructure projects from planning and feasibility stage, through procurement, design development and implementation, to completion and handover, will be valuable
· Previous experience of working with UNICEF or other UN agencies in similar role will be an added advantage.
