Sports Economics, Open Rank (Assistant/Associate/Full Professor)
Georgetown University's Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service (SFS-Q) aims to recruit a research-oriented economist specializing in sports economics for a core faculty position in the School of Foreign Service in Qatar, as part of a major expansion of curricular and research programs. Core faculty positions are full-time positions which carry the job security and commitment to academic freedom associated with tenure-track appointments. We would also consider an appointment as a visiting professor or visiting research professor. Visiting positions are 1 or 2 year appointments.
The context of our search for a sports economist is as follows: Qatar will also host the 2022 World Cup and the Qatar 2022 Committee has invited SFS-Q to become its sole academic partner. Among other things, this partnership will entail the creation and delivery of a set of educational programs aimed at building the skills needed for the delivery of the World Cup in 2022 and a research program to assess the economic impact of the World Cup on Qatar, the Gulf, and the region.
Elements of the research program in economics at SFS-Q include a regular seminar series, a research mentoring program that brings senior scholars chosen by incumbent faculty to Doha for one-week visits, a visiting scholar program that supports more extensive involvement by leading scholars, periodic post-doctoral research workshops, opportunities to spend time at the Economics Department on our main campus in Washington, DC (http://econ.georgetown.edu/), and regular research semesters. The nominal teaching load is 2-2 for core faculty and visiting faculty. However, entry-level core faculty appointments ordinarily include teaching load reductions during the first two years and eligibility for a junior research semester during the third year. Beginning in the fourth year core track faculty may earn continuing course releases based on publication achievements accumulated since the beginning of the initial appointment. For exceptional senior candidates, the visiting positions may be designated as visiting research professorships, which carry appropriately light negotiated teaching loads.
Applicants at advanced rank must have substantial research accomplishments and evidence of ambitious ongoing research agendas; entry-level applicants must have exceptional promise of future research productivity. All applicants must have outstanding teaching credentials.
Qatar offers a diverse, safe and family-friendly environment. Compensation is excellent and includes a 25% expatriate bonus and annual 2/9 summer research stipend. The expatriate benefits package includes housing, utilities, local transportation allowance, annual home leave allowance, health insurance, private school tuition for accompanying children, etc. SFS-Q provides generous research support and support for conference travel; these appointments include substantial start-up research funds. Faculty at the School of Foreign Service in Qatar are eligible to apply for Qatar National Priorities Research Program grants from the Qatar National Research Fund.
