Our partner is a social enterprise, with offices in UK and Malawi, they are working towards educating community organisations and farmers on permaculture and sustainable farming practices with the purpose of improving livelihoods, environment and food security. In addition to its permaculture demonstration centre, they are currently implementing a climate-smart-agriculture-project to improve the economic and environmental sustainability of agriculture and increase farmers’ resilience to climate change impacts.
You will be the fourth volunteer on assignment with the organisation. Up until very recently, their accounting and finances were handled by the Executive Directors, and AfID volunteers have focussed on training them on day-to-day accounting, budgeting, financial strategy and reporting. The most recent volunteer was requested to support the new Executive Director and review their use of Quickbooks and help to make the most out of the software.
This has two implications on accounting/finance. They would like to decentralise their budgeting process, and would like assistance from a volunteer in creating departmental budgets that feed into an organisational budget, and train department heads and other relevant staff in managing their own budget lines. As an extension to this, they currently price the workshops based on the recipients’ ability to pay – individual farmers pay a lot less, than larger charities or corporates. They would appreciate assistance in analysing workshop costs to see how flexible they can be with pricing whilst remaining profitable. Secondly, they are looking to be audited externally for the first time and would like assistance in preparing for an external audit.
This will be a three-week assignment; they would ideally like a volunteer to support them in June-July.
