The Media Relations Manager is responsible for amplifying WorldFish’s message and building understanding and support for our issues. You will have an instinctive ability to identify and pitch our issues to the world’s media and be ready to take WorldFish’s media engagement into new areas, working with print, digital, and broadcast media channels.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide strategic guidance on and oversee the management of the following outreach channels/tools: media and seminars/events
- Develop media strategy, cultivate relationships & outreach plan, provide first point of contact for media requests
- Handle day-to-day calls with the media, the issuing of statements, press releases, and speeches
- Identify and develop a timeline of events and other potential opportunities for messaging
- Draft OpEds, press releases, talking points, media materials, among others
- Work with and advise colleagues on media handling on issues, and provide expert media handling advice to senior staff
- Engage in outreach to science, news and social media, civil society organizations, policy institutes, private sector and other partners
Skills and Qualifications
- Degrees in Communications, Public Relations or Journalism, or other related advanced degree
- 7-10 years of relevant work experience specifically in science or international development
- Experienced in briefing the media on difficult and demanding issues, across both specialist, international and national outlets, print, online, and broadcast
- Proven experience in turning scientific and policy issues into copy and stories that will interest the media
- Good project management experience and able to work within tight deadlines
- Solution focused with sound judgment, effective decision-making and personal accountability
- Excellent communication skills in English, both written and oral
- Reliable, confident and enthusiastic with excellent organizational skills
