We are seeking a Gastroenterology or Infectious Disease Specialist Registrar to undertake an MRC funded Clinical fellowship to work in Professor Simmons’s group based in the Human Immunology Unit (HIU) and Translational Gastroenterology Unit (TGU). The postholder will undertake a DPhil in molecular immunology. The project is a distinct subproject of an MRC funded experimental medicine study aimed at defining the correlates of protective immunity to Salmonella typhi and paratyphi in a human challenge model.
The project to be undertaken by the training fellow recruited to this post would be to define how normal human intestinal epithelial cells, intestinal stem cells and antigen presenting cells recognise, respond and protect against Salmonella typhi in comparison with the normal gut commensal microflora. There would then be an opportunity to test findings from this work in samples obtained from individuals resistant or susceptible to development of typhoid obtained from the challenge model study, or alternatively samples obtained via a field study of natural disease in Malawi.
This post is aimed at a clinician requiring a versatile and in depth training in molecular immunology that could be used to develop an academic career in gastroenterology or infectious disease. The postholder will work closely with the other members of this experimental medicine challenge team and also with the multidisciplinary team of scientists, clinicians and computational biologists within Professor Simmons’s lab.
The post is available immediately, for 3 years.
Informal enquiries can be made to Professor Alison Simmons on tel: 01865 222628. Please complete an online application form and attach a copy of your CV and supporting statement.
