SOCIAL POLICY AND ECONOMIC SPECIALIST

PURPOSE OF THE POST:
Under the supervision of the Chief, Social Policy, the Social and Economics Specialist will support the establishment and strengthening of child participation mechanisms at the local level with an objective that children’s views are reflected in the local development plans. And also to seek a mechanism for the democratic selection of the members of the National Youth Parliament through the Children’s Councils at the district level, so that issues related to children are discussed not only at local level but also at the national forum.
MAJOR DUTIES:
- Support the design and implementation of research and evaluation on emerging issues related to children.
- Support design and implementation of budget analysis studies.
- Support the process of the formulation of the National Policy and Plan of Action for Children.
- Support the local councils to strengthen their capacity to formulate plans and budgets for children, to monitor child indicators, and to coordinate with local stakeholders.
- Support the local councils to strengthen mechanisms for child participation within existing decision making processes.
- Prepare inputs for donor reports, annual reports, and any other reports required by the office.
- Monitor direct cash transfers to governmental and non-governmental implementing partners.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Education:
• Advanced University degree in one of the following disciplines: Economics, International Development, Social or Public Policy, or other relevant social science.
- Work Experience:
• At least 5 years of experience in social research and advocacy with expertise in quantitative and qualitative survey analysis. • In depth understanding of development and political context in Malawi. • In depth understanding of child-specific issues, experience of providing socio-economic analysis of child policies an asset. • Experience within or with government institutions an asset.
- Languages: Fluency in English and Knowledge of Chichewa is an asset.
