We are seeking a highly motivated, experienced and results-oriented Web Designer to conceptualize and execute graphic design solutions for a wide variety of web projects. Under the direction of the Director of Communications, the website designer will be responsible for designing and maintaining CIMMYT’s primary website, multiple ‘subsidiary’ websites, the CIMMYT intranet and mobile applications. The designer will be accountable for the ‘look and feel’ of the websites while the content will be the responsibility of other communications staff.

The position is based at CIMMYT’s Main Campus (located 45 km northeast of Mexico City, Mexico).
Specific responsibilities of this position:
- Plan, design, create and code multiple websites that combine text with video, photography, graphics and sound.
- Effectively interpret corporate and project needs and translate them into compelling visual designs.
- Re-design the CIMMYT and project websites in order to create emotional and intellectual connections with stakeholders.
- Design web interfaces using techniques based on usability theory and concepts related to creating visual flow.
- Effectively communicate design direction and production details for other members of the communications team and internal clients.
- Apply an understanding of typography, usability, story-boarding and iconography when working on web projects.
- Work within project schedules and within tight deadlines.
- Collaborate with other CIMMYT graphic designers and CIMMYT programs/projects to ensure designs are consistent with expectations and overall goals.
- Stay current on visual design techniques and technology to support/expand CIMMYT’s reputation and brand identity.
- Perform other web design-related tasks as assigned by supervisor.
We are seeking candidates with the following qualifications, skills and attitudes:
- BA/BS or equivalent degree in graphic design, communications or a relevant field (and/or a related design/new media diploma). Equivalent experience may be considered as an alternative.
- Minimum of five years of experience in an innovative digital design environment with significant web design experience. Submission of a portfolio of your design work that demonstrates creativity and expertise is required.
- Exceptionally strong analytical and creative problem-solving skills related to graphic design, with proven ability to take projects from concept to final production with minimal supervision.
- Mature sense of visuals/color usage and experience applying theories related to color schemes, use of space, text placement, usability and visual flow.
- Proficiency in HTML, CSS, Javascript/Jquery, Flash, etc.
- Proficiency in the Adobe Creativity Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat, etc.) and in web editing tools such as Dreamweaver and Notepad++.
- Proficiency in InDesign.
- Knowledge of Mac and PC platforms.
- Ability to create content specification and design guidelines.
- Full competency and fluency in English.
- Strong communications and problem-solving skills and the ability to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to work under pressure, with high accuracy.
- Creativity, particularly in devising new approaches to design and content.
- Familiarity with standard design concepts, practices and procedures.
- Able to liaise professionally with clients in the development of quality and effective communications projects.
- Ability to work with different nationalities, and as a member of a multidisciplinary and diverse work team.
- Willingness to travel as required.
We will offer an initial contract for 3 years, which is renewable subject to continued need and funding for the position and performance of the staff member.
