About: Partners In Health (PIH) is a non-profit corporation based in Boston, Massachusetts, whose mission is to provide a preferential option for the poor in health care. Through service delivery, training, research, and advocacy, PIH works globally to bring the benefits of modern science to those most in need and to serve as an antidote to despair.  PIH currently has programs in Haiti, Peru, Guatemala, Mexico, Russia, Rwanda, Lesotho, Malawi, Burundi, Kazakhstan, the Dominican Republic, and Boston.
PIH has been working in Malawi since 2007 supporting MOH in strengthening Health system and provide Good quality health care in Neno District.
Position Overview: The External Relations team that is tasked with raising the profile of Abwenzi Pa Za Umoyo (APZU), Partners in Health, within Malawi and internationally. The Public Relations and Documentation Coordinator is a key member of this team that ensures communication of APZU’s work to the headquarters office, liaises with key partners, and tells APZU’s story in a compelling manner.
Responsibilities:
  • Work with managers to produce pertinent and compelling field-based visual, written, and multimedia content about their programs
      • Identify and independently pursue compelling stories across programmatic and clinical departments
      • Capture and manage (using Merlin cross-site database) photography and video to further illustrate stories
      • Create database of materials documenting our work for external partners
      • Provide training, through skills-building workshops and mentorship for the management team on public relations tools
      • Maintain close coordination with headquarters communications team in Boston to identify current story focuses, collaborate on content, source quotes, and track and fact-check material for stories
  • Work with Boston-based development team and Malawi-based Grants Manager to support existing external relationships, with a particular focus on partnerships, and cultivate new opportunities
      • Respond quickly to development team’s requests for specific qualitative data, stories, and coordinate existing content to share with donors
  • Focus on building a network of contacts within Malawi to increase awareness of APZU’s work at the national level, and pursue new external platforms internationally to promote our work
      • Create a database of partners for use across APZU community and clinical departments
  • Support visitor management for external parties in Neno
      • Screen requests to ensure appropriate and manageable flow of external visitors, including donors and local and international media
      • Coordinate, along with Director of Administration, visitor logistics (including housing, transport etc.) and serve as a point of contact in the field for external visitors
      • Develop itineraries tailored to visitor interest
      • Communicate with relevant Boston-based teams to report on visits and necessary follow-up
Required Skills and Experience:
  • Bachelor’s Degree required; background/interest in social science, area studies or public health preferred
  • Demonstrated experience (2 years minimum) providing administrative or coordination and logistics support in an office setting
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and flexibility are required
  • Ability to interact professionally with culturally diverse staff
  • Strong organizational skills and detail orientation; Ability to be flexible, think creatively, and manage competing priorities
  • Demonstrated maturity and good judgment
  • Comfortable living in a rural area with ability to take initiative and work with minimal direction
Preferred Skills and Experience:
  • Previous experience in resource-limited settings strongly preferred
  • Experience with program planning and implementation
  • Photography, graphic design, and/or journalism experience
Living Conditions: Fellows will be provided with a room in a modest staff guesthouse in Neno, with shared kitchen and bathroom facilities. Neno is a rural setting and fellows will have limited access to urban centers. Fellows will receive health insurance and a living stipend of $650/month, and an award of $1500 upon successful completion of the fellowship year. Flights to and from the placement site and all other costs associated with GHC programming are included, including $600 in professional development funds.
